Lasse Hallstr?m: why the adopted king of American emotionalism went home to Sweden for bloody thrills

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Director Lasse Hallstr?m is known primarily at this point for heart-tugging films aimed squarely at American audiences. His next big U.S. release, "Safe Haven," is, like his earlier "Dear John," a Nicholas Sparks adaptation - not exactly the mark of someone interested in gritty foreign fare.

But Hallstr?m has also made his first Swedish film in a quarter-century and, surprisingly, it's an occasionally blood-soaked thriller. "The Hypnotist" is Sweden's entry in the Oscars' foreign film sweepstakes - and Hallstr?m's bid at not being typed, as he explained after TheWrap's screening of the film Wednesday night at the Landmark Theatre.

"I wanted to show another side," he told TheWrap's editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman and a capacity crowd curious to see the filmmaker's break from form. "I wanted to show people that I may not be as soft-hearted" as recent films would suggest, he added with a laugh.

Except he still is, when it comes down to it, all suggestions that he was doing a strict genre piece to the contrary. "I wouldn't say it's a thriller," Hallstr?m said. "It's a family drama with thriller elements. I felt, at least with the Swedish thrillers that I've seen, that they tend to sacrifice performance for the plot a little bit. It may show in the final result that my key interest was in the family drama, and a little less in the plot."

It didn't hurt, when it came to deciding on the project, that one of the key players in that family drama would be his wife, Lena Olin. She plays the estranged wife of the titular hypnotist and distraught mother of a boy who's kidnapped by a deranged killer.

Waxman asked why Hallstr?m - as someone who's been making films in America for almost 25 years and living in upstate New York for close to 15 - didn't just transplant the action to the U.S., even if the source novel was Swedish.

"Maybe I could've," he said, "but it was just a coincidence of not finding a script here that I really liked; being homesick for Stockholm, Sweden; finding a part for Lena; wanting to do a thriller; and getting back to working with people in Sweden that I really enjoyed working with (long ago). Watching Lena flourish speaking Swedish was great, and I think it was liberating for her to speak the language and improvise and play around with the material."

"The Hypnotist" is a heavily narrative film, with the relentless pacing you'd associate with any U.S. thriller, but Hallstr?m didn't necessarily take immediately to the form. He brightened when talking about the improvisation of the family scenes, but put an intonation on the word "plot" that made it sound like an epithet. "Making a film like this, you struggle fighting the clich?s and trying to breathe life into characters that don't have life on the page," he said, speaking of the story's two disturbed villains in particular.

"I may not be the guy to do these kind of films," he finally admitted with a laugh.

But there's little doubt that "Hypnotist" could broaden Hollywood's image of him as a heart-rending go-to guy.

Looking back over his career, he still referred to 1985's "My Life as a Dog" as his career peak. ("You should see it!" he urged the younger members of the audience, reminding them it's a Criterion Collection title.) Hallstr?m was harder on other films, like "The Cider House Rules" - pointing out the lavishly emotional score as something he regretted, after his early years of using minimalist music in films like "Dog."

"The performances are great" in "Cider House Rules," he said, but "it has a score that unfortunately rings a little bit pushy. That score was beautiful, but just not right for the film, and not the kind of score I probably would have dared to do just two years earlier. You get a little numbed coming to America and spending time here. You go to the movies and the strings are soaring, and they keep soaring when you go to bed and when you go to work the next day. You have no problem adding the strings because you've heard them all around you" - until you live to regret it because you realize the orchestration has helped give you a reputation for tending toward syrup.

"It's hard to believe looking at my credits now, but I was so afraid of the sentimental," the director said. "And I still am, believe it or not. Because I'm drawn to that kind of material, but I keep fighting sentimentality. But I'm drawn to sentiment. I keep walking that tightrope walk, and probably I get into the wrong side at times. But I really am just drawn to moving people in a truthful way with performances that ring true, and observations of real human behavior that we can recognize and relate to. All that is the fuel for my engine, why I make movies. And then I end up doing things that now I hear they step into sentimentality?despite the fact that I throw up when I see a movie that pushes the sentimental. So I want to stay away from that.Still."

With a movie that pushes the body count more than it pulls heartstrings, Hallstr?m seems to have gotten his wish in a big way. As for "Safe Haven," which is set for a spring release (and will open in America before "The Hypnotist" does), that's anyone's tearjerking guess.

New research in The FASEB Journal suggests that a new detection method can accurately identify genetic switches lost and gained during the development of breast cancer tumors, resulting in earlier diagnosis

Bethesda, MDPhysicians may now be better at detecting breast cancer than ever before, but much more work remains to ensure accurate diagnosis is possible and especially to assess future risk. That's why researchers from Germany have been working to develop a new test of gene action to predict cancer risk both at first diagnosis and into the future. In a new research report appearing in the December 2012 issue of The FASEB Journal, researchers show that the various genetic switches, which are turned on and off in the regular development of every cell in the body, can be analyzed in minute detail to determine the presence or risk of breast cancer growth.

"We hope that our results help to develop tools to identify breast cancer patients when tumors are still small, and eventually curable," said Clarissa Gerhauser, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Division of Epigenomics and Cancer Risk Factors at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany. "These tools might hopefully also help to predict the progression of tumor development and guide decisions on cancer treatment."

To make this advance, Gerhauser and colleagues extracted DNA from 10 small tumor tissue samples and 10 normal breast tissues from breast cancer patients. They made small fragments from the extracted DNA and identified the genetic switches within those fragments. By comparing the results from various combinations of DNA fragments, scientists discovered which switches were more prevalent in tumor tissue than in normal breast tissue. The methods used to quantify the switches are extremely sensitive, making it feasible that small biopsies would be sufficient for analysis and testing.

"This is a milestone. The method described detects activity at the genetic level, which often occurs well before any outward symptoms occur," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "Not only could this allow for earlier diagnosis of breast cancer and more accurate risk assessment, but eventually, this technique might be used in other types of cancer as well."

How to Use Email Marketing to Your Advantage - Internet Network ...

Be Kind And Share :)

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Source: soluciones4web.com via Larry on Pinterest

?

Email marketing is a widely used method of advertising a specific product or service. Millions of these emails are transmitted almost hourly to various potential customers all over the globe. While many of these emails wind up being caught by a spam filter, there are many methods you can utilize to ensure you get the best coverage and response.

1. eCommerce Enabled ? Most eCommerce platforms have an email marketing add-on built into its system. Any customer who purchases an item from your website could be put into an email list that will allow you to send coupons, discount codes, information and more automatically and without intervention from yourself.

2. Newsletters ? If you are using a content management system such as Joomla or WordPress, you can add a component to control a newsletter subscription method. Visitors could sign up for this newsletter and your CMS will create a master list of emails for you to contact through its system. If you don?t have the means to add a newsletter plug-in to your website, a simple .php form with contact information can do the same thing. It just takes more work on your behalf to create your email list.

3. Opt-in Email Lists ? For excellent results, purchasing an email list composed of users who have opted in to specific content could be greatly beneficial. These users are already waiting for incoming email from his or her chosen niche and you could reach a wide range of people using these. Since they have opted in to receive emails from solicitors, there is a better chance of quality contact from someone interested in your content.

4. Legalities ? Make sure you are following the most common criteria for mass email sending. Too many unsolicited emails produced by your IP address could get you blacklisted in organizations like the CBL, which will block your emails on a grand scale. Even if the emails are legitimate, blacklists can be severely detrimental to your business. Legitimate practices will help you steer clear of these blacklisting sites.

5. Purpose ? Mass email marketing with a proven legitimate purpose can help keep filters from flagging your content. Giving individuals a way to opt-out of your content can go a long way to establishing trust. Be mindful of the content you are using in your email.

Email marketing is a cost effective way to keep your target audience interested in what you have to offer. Many companies will send mass emails on a daily basis to subscribers and for most of them, it doesn?t cost a dime. However, for those who pay for a certain amount of bandwidth per month, it could become a worthwhile expense.

The Ultimate Holiday Fitness Gift Guide | Day 16 | On Running ...

By Traci D Mitchell, today at 9:21 am

Need help finding a healthy gift for the holidays? From November 12th through December 12th, I will be featuring great fitness-related gift ideas- stocking stuffers and beyond! I've searched long and hard for gifts that fit the bill for people who like to exercise and appreciate fitness!

Running shoes can make or break a run...and if you don't get the right shoe, watch out! Lately, more and more companies are copping onto shoes that offer greater responsiveness and less support, letting feet and legs get strong - preventing injuries down the road.

Day 16 | On Running Shoes

Ideal Gift Candidate?

  • Runners of all levels who are graduating to a more sophisticated shoe that will help them perform better...and launch off the ground faster!

What is it?
On Running Shoes are a Swiss-designed shoe that incorporate innovative sole-cushioning that absorb vertical and horizontal forces. The shoe is very responsive, meaning you can really feel the ground under your feet despite the bubble-like sole.

Why it made the list?

  • The shoes are designed by the speed and/or weight of the runner, and not based on gate - or how the runner's foot hits the ground. I love this approach! There are four different "levels" of shoes, from easy-going recreational runners up to fast racers.
  • As mentioned above, the shoes is responsive and doesn't come stuffed with all sorts of rollbar support that for decades has been touted to help?pronators or suppinators. (Personally, I don't buy into this anymore) The Ons let the runner feel the ground beneath them much more, while still providing a reasonable about of cushioning.
  • I've raced in the Cloudsurfer model - and really enjoyed running in them! This is coming from someone who is NOT a natural-born runner.

How much is it?
About $119 - $139
Nope, their not?the cheapest shoes, but if there is one thing you should?pay a little more for, it's shoes! Unhealthy feet = unhealthy body.

Where can I get it?
Online or locally:

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service A ...

A good business website always incorporates SEO techniques into their marketing mix. SEO is crucial to getting your page at the top of the results page. Check this article out for more information.

In search engine optimization, you should always keep up with where you stand in the searches. If you don?t watch your ranking, you won?t know if your SEO work is effective. Find online tools, such as Google or Alexa, and do a bit of research on your page rank.

Make the most of your title tags to ensure that search engines correctly interpret the purpose of your site. Search engines usually will not show content past 60 characters. Search engines pay less attention to keywords after a certain point.

Write meta tags that engage the reader on each website page, this can help you obtain good search engine results. A good description tag will make your site stand out on the search engine results page. You should use this tool wisely, and make sure the meta tag information is succinct and informative. Doing so will increase your website?s traffic and raise your rank on search engines.

Boosting your site?s SEO takes time, so remember to be patient. A large amount of traffic will not come overnight from your efforts. Contrary to what some may tell you, it can be months before you start to get a steady stream of traffic, especially if your site has just been built. You need to build your good name, and that takes time.

If you have a website serving an audience or market that has established ezines, you can contribute posts and articles including backlinks that will lead visitors to your website. Ezines will be saved forever and they can be accessed forever. Someone may find you years later!

The best thing you should do for your internet presence is to constantly give it updated content that is relevant to the present. Old and out-of-date content will discourage visitors from returning to your site.

Find out how many years of experience they have in the business. To make an educated choice, you need to be aware of all risks and potential downsides that may be involved.

Optimizing your business for search engines is how you optimize your business for customers. Unfortunately, some online businesses still underestimate the importance of their search engine rankings.

There is hardly anything more important than unique content when it comes to search engine optimization. To attract traffic, you need to provide information that is different from that on other sites and other Web pages. You will attract and keep an audience if you offer well-written, unique content that is useful to them.

Before you begin to optimize your site, you must have access to a variety of analytical tools. You will need to invest in the analytics software and have them in place so you will be able to track what tactics are working and which ones are not. This way, you can make changes as needed.

Search engine optimization is accomplished through many different means. Your results will be optimized by making sure your keywords are large in variety and spellings. With this increased performance, the user will have a better overall experience.

Include transcripts for any videos or audio included on your site. When you offer these transcripts, search engines can then categorize your content and position it properly in its listings.

The choice is yours whether or not you list your site on link directories, but if you do choose this path, you must only select sites which are topical and highly respected. Many directories are design flaws or are simply out of date. Exercise caution whenever you decide to create an affiliation with another site.

An SEO tactic you may wish to employ is maintaining a blog relevant to your site. It might also be a good idea to participate in discussions and activities on other related blogs. It is not difficult to get a blog ranked on the results page of the search engines, as long as you constantly update the content. Getting links to your site out there is essential for your search ranking.

You can use interactive features such as games or consumer surveys to help you find your correct targeted audience. People like to take surveys, finding out more about themselves in the process. Your survey should help you determine the shopping habits and interests of your visitors. You?ll learn more about your customers this way and people will enjoy doing the surveys.

You should develop the habit of commenting on relevant topics and blogs to create links back to your site. You will be allowed to include the link to your business if you provide a valuable comment. Try to place your link only on blogs that are relevant to your business or product, and make sure that your comments provide the blog site with valuable information. You can easily leave related comments and links on blogs where you?re familiar with the subject.

There?s a lot to search engine optimization, but as was stated earlier in the article, it?s absolutely essential to make sure your website gets the business it deserves. Make sure to apply these techniques to your website, as soon as possible, so that you can start getting more customers and more profits.

U.S. chefs' solution for invading Frankenfish? Eat 'em

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The northern snakehead is known as "Frankenfish" and "rattlesnakes with fins," and some chefs say one way to stop the predatory, fast-spreading fish is obvious - with a fork.

With a reputation as fearsome as its name, the voracious snakehead fish has intruded throughout much of the Potomac River basin in Virginia and Maryland in the last decade, snapping up anything that gets in front of it.

Putting the torpedo-shaped snakehead on the menu is Washington-area restaurants' way of helping to control the Asian newcomer. Chefs said they have a key weapon on their side - humans' zest for eating up other species to the vanishing point.

"When man turns its attention to an animal, it's very difficult for the animal. He (the snakehead) is dangerous, but chefs are more dangerous," said David Stein, executive chef at Tony & Joe's Seafood Place in Washington.

He praised the snakehead for its dense, meaty, white flesh with a mild taste that is ideal for anything from grilling to sauteing. But given the name, snakehead ceviche might be going too far.

"The guy that orders that gets it for free," Stein said.

The northern snakehead, or Channa argus, has joined a tankful of invasive fish that U.S. authorities are urging people to control by eating them.

Lionfish in the Caribbean, Asian carp in the Mississippi River basin and blue catfish in Virginia rivers are among other newcomers that environmentalists want to see on a dinner plate.

SLAB-LIKE FLESH

But the snakehead stands out among its invasive peers because its slab-like flesh and its minimal shrinkage is seemingly ideal for white-tablecloth restaurants.

Some four restaurants in the Baltimore and Washington area serve it regularly, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

At Tony & Joe's, snakehead appetizers cost $10 to $11, and entrees about $26. Maryland is the only state with a commercial market and the limited supply is keeping prices high.

"They're really amazing. Probably if it was called any other name than snakehead, people would be more willing to give them a try," Stein said, admiring a 7-pound (3-kg) fish that had been killed by bow and arrow.

Snakeheads are hardy, fast-growing, voracious and prolific. They got their start in the Potomac through releases from aquariums and the live fish trade, and have turned up in such places as California and Florida. The name comes from its coarse scales, boa constrictor-like colouring and a reptilian snout with a mouth featuring dog-like teeth.

The fish are air breathers that can last for days out of water. Even when gutted and with their throats cut, they gape for breath, said John Rorapaugh, director of sustainability and sales at ProFish, a Washington wholesaler.

"Once they get to mature size, they are on top of the food chain and are ravenous," he said.

Mice, birds, frogs, other fish, and even AA batteries have turned up inside snakeheads, Rorapaugh said. The fish weigh from about 8 to 15 pounds when mature.

He said he pays about $5 a pound ($12.50 a kg) for snakehead, and has shipped some outside the Washington area, including to New York's upscale Gramercy Tavern.

Josh Newhard, an expert on the snakehead with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said it was too early to say what the snakehead's long-term impact would be on its invaded environment.

Native species have shown no sign of decrease despite the fish's "remarkable" spread, he said.

"The potential is really high for them to impact other fish species. The fact that people want to remove them from the system is really good," he said.

Use of stem cells in personalized medicine

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Johns Hopkins researchers report concrete steps in the use of human stem cells to test how diseased cells respond to drugs. Their success highlights a pathway toward faster, cheaper drug development for some genetic illnesses, as well as the ability to pre-test a therapy's safety and effectiveness on cultured clones of a patient's own cells.

The project, described in an article published November 25 on the website of the journal Nature Biotechnology, began several years ago, when Gabsang Lee, D.V.M., Ph.D., an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Cell Engineering, was a postdoctoral fellow at Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York. To see if induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) could be used to make specialized disease cells for quick and easy drug testing, Lee and his colleagues extracted cells from the skin of a person with a rare genetic disease called Riley-Day syndrome, chosen because it affects only one type of nerve cell that is difficult if not impossible to extract directly from a traditional biopsy. These traits made Riley-Day an ideal candidate for alternative ways of generating cells for study.

In a so-called "proof of concept" experiment, the researchers biochemically reprogrammed the skin cells from the patient to form iPSCs, which can grow into any cell type in the body. The team then induced the iPSCs to grow into nerve cells. "Because we could study the nerve cells directly, we could for the first time see exactly what was going wrong in this disease," says Lee. Some symptoms of Riley-Day syndrome are insensitivity to pain, episodes of vomiting, poor coordination and seizures; only about half of affected patients reach age 30.

In the recent research at Johns Hopkins and Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Lee and his co-workers used these same lab-grown Riley-Day nerve cells to screen about 7,000 drugs for their effects on the diseased cells. With the aid of a robot programmed to analyze the effects, the researchers quickly identified eight compounds for further testing, of which one -- SKF-86466 -- ultimately showed promise for stopping or reversing the disease process at the cellular level.

Lee says a clinical trial with SKF-86466 might not be feasible because of the small number of Riley-Day patients worldwide, but suggests that a closely related version of the compound, one that has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for another use, could be employed for the patients after a few tests.

The implications of the experiment reach beyond Riley-Day syndrome, however. "There are many rare, 'orphan' genetic diseases that will never be addressed through the costly current model of drug development," Lee explains. "We've shown that there may be another way forward to treat these illnesses."

Another application of the new stem cell process could be treatments tailored not only to an illness, but also to an individual patient, Lee says. That is, iPSCs could be made for a patient, then used to create a laboratory culture of, for example, pancreatic cells, in the case of a patient with type 1 diabetes. The efficacy and safety of various drugs could then be tested on the cultured cells, and doctors could use the results to help determine the best treatment. "This approach could move much of the trial-and-error process of beginning a new treatment from the patient to the petri dish, and help people to get better faster," says Lee.

Big news for North Korea.?It's leader ? Kim Jong-Un has been named the Sexiest Man Alive.

Parature's Best Customer Service Advice Series: Part 3 ? Expert ...

Recently, Parature asked a group of customer service professionals from around the globe to offer their best customer service advice. From managers to CSRs, we received a fantastic variety of best advice.

In the final installment of our three-part series, we?ll share insights from three top customer service and customer experience thought leaders: Shep Hyken, Kate Nasser and Bill Quiseng:

Shep Hyken on Creating Wow Moments through Proactive Customer Service
?If opportunity doesn?t knock, build a door.? ~ Milton Berle

Here is an idea that will give you the opportunity to look like a star. You?ve heard of a Customer Service department. How about a Proactive Service department?

This idea is not really new. Companies and people have been doing this all along. It may not be an official department. As a matter of fact, it is common sense. Here are several examples of what I am referring to:

The waiter who fills a customer?s water glass before the customer has to ask.

The shipping department that follows up with a customer to insure the package arrived. If it didn?t arrive, they start the tracking process or reship the package.

The salesperson that sells a VCR to a customer and calls the customer the next day to make sure he/she was able to connect it to their television. If the customer couldn?t, the salesperson walks the customer through the process, step by step.

As mentioned above, the idea of proactive service is not new. But a formal process to provide this type of ?thinking ahead? is not usually the norm. It is usually an individual?s effort, within a company, that provides this level of service.

Proactive service is an opportunity to show how good you are. A customer decides to do business with you because they trust you enough to deliver ?the goods.? Proactive service reinforces the decision the customer made. It helps to build respect and loyalty. Why leave this powerful concept to chance. Make it a normal procedure as part of the sales and follow-up process and watch your customers say, ?Wow!?

Kate Nasser on Valuing the Perspective of the Customer
Kate advises leaders to remember that customers judge every single interaction from their perspective. Be transparent and assess success from the outside in ? not the inside out. This builds trust and loyalty.

Says Kate in a recent blog post, ?Sales and customer service leaders create super customer experience possibilities when they pave the customer?s road with transparency. Poor communication, hidden built in charges, surprise required purchases at the end of the sales cycle risk the sale and damage trust and the brand.?

Facebook not so fun with a click from boss or mom

LONDON (Reuters) - Posting pictures of yourself plastered at a party and talking trash online with your Facebook friends may be more stress than it's worth now that your boss and mom want to see it all.

A survey from Edinburgh Business School released on Monday showed Facebook users are anxious that all those self-published sins may be coming home to roost with more than half of employers claiming to have used Facebook to weed out job candidates.

"Facebook used to be like a great party for all your friends where you can dance, drink and flirt," said Ben Marder, author of the report and fellow in marketing at the Business School.

"But now with your Mom, Dad and boss there, the party becomes an anxious event full of potential social landmines."

On average, people are Facebook friends with seven different social circles, the report found, with real friends known to the user offline the most common.

More than four-fifths of users add extended family on Facebook, a similar number add siblings. Less than 70 percent are connected to friends of friends while more than 60 percent added their colleagues online, despite the anxiety this may cause.

Facebook has settings to control the information seen by different types of friends, but only one third use them, the report said.

"I'm not worried at all because all the really messy pics - me, drunken or worse - I detag straight away," said Chris from London, aged 30.

People were more commonly friends with former boyfriends or girlfriends than with current ones, the report also found.

Black Friday sales slip as shoppers opt for Thursday ?doorbusters?

Security guards break up a fight between shoppers outside a Bowling Green, Ky., Target, Nov. 22, 2012. (AP)

Black Friday, the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season, saw more foot traffic than ever before, according to estimates. But it appears so-called "doorbuster" deals offered the day before dinged sales.

According to ShopperTrak, which tracks retail foot traffic, there were more than 307 million store visits on Friday, up 3.5 percent. But Black Friday shoppers spent an estimated $11.2 billion, down 1.8 percent over 2011, when consumers spent $11.4 billion.

And for once, the sluggish economy is not to blame.

"It is all Black Thursday's fault," ZeroHedge.com said.

[Slideshow: Black Friday madness]

Shopping malls were "less hectic" on Black Friday this year, Bloomberg.com reported, as retailers "have turned Black Friday, once a one-day event after Thanksgiving, into a week's worth of deals and discounts."

And Thursday's deals "attracted some of the spending that's usually meant for Friday," ShopperTrak said.

Big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target were open on Thanksgiving night, drawing crowds that were--in some cases--rowdy. (Thankfully, it was nothing like the dystopian version of shopping hell recently envisioned by "Saturday Night Live.")

Another reason for the Black Friday dip: people skipped lines and shopped online. According to IBM Benchmark, online sales rose 17 percent on Thanksgiving and 21 percent on Black Friday.

Syrians want to know: 'Are you okay after Superstorm Sandy?'

With the sound of mortars in the background, Syrians in Aleppo express concern for our American correspondent and his storm-battered homeland.

By Tom A. Peter,?Correspondent / November 18, 2012

Syrian women work on their field in the village of Tarafat, Syria in October. Many Syrians have expressed concern for Americans hit by hurricane Sandy.

I had just sat down to interview a commander of the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo and we were exchanging the normal pre-meeting pleasantries as some distant gunfire cracked in the background. After 20 months of conflict here, most artillery and gunfire goes unnoticed unless people are close enough to be directly affected.

With this as the backdrop for our interview, I was taken off guard when he asked if my friends and family were all right after Superstorm Sandy.

As a Californian living abroad, I was aware of Sandy. I had seen a few pictures of the aftermath, but I hadn?t even followed the Sandy news close enough to know that it had been classified as a ?superstorm,? as a opposed to a hurricane. Yet here was a man whose nation is being torn apart by a violent civil war that had claimed the lives of several friends and tens of thousands of Syrians, and he?d been following Sandy news.

I initially thought the comment was a one off, a lone hurricane watcher, perhaps he was a Syrian with an interest in meteorology. Yet it has happened again and again and everyone who asks knows that it was a superstorm, not a hurricane.

Working in the midst of a war like Syria, it?s easy to assume that for those involved the conflict, the situation is their entire life and there is little time for details, like a destructive storm thousands of miles away. But Superstorm Sandy is just one of the odd questions about America you might encounter in Syria as people try to take a mental break from the war.

One night, I found myself with a group of FSA fighters watching Jumanji on an Arabic movie station that gives Arabic subtitles. We got into a debate about whether the child actress in the film was a young Drew Barrymore or someone else. (It was a teenage Kirsten Dunst.)

A few days later, I sparked a heated discussion when I jokingly asked a Syrian activist wearing a glove on only one hand if it was a tribute to Michael Jackson. The person wearing the glove argued that while Michael?s music was impossible not to enjoy, it had been tainted by the scandals surrounding his personal life. His friend argued that art is not defined by the artist and Michael Jackson remains hands down one of the best singers ever, regardless of what happened off stage.

In all the conflicts I have ever covered, I find myself in these conversations.?Everyone tries to hold on to a normal world of news and pop culture to take them beyond their current hardships.

Nigeria: 11 dead in suicide bombs at army church

(AP) ? At least 11 people were killed and about 30 injured when twin car bombs hit a Protestant church in a major military establishment in northcentral Nigeria, officials said Sunday, a month after a deadly church bombing in the same state.

A bus laden with explosives first rammed into St. Andrew Military Protestant Church in the military barracks in Jaji in Kaduna state at about 12 noon, said the director of army public relations Brig. Gen. Bola Koleoso. Then a Toyota Camry car parked just outside the church exploded 10 minutes later, as people fled the first blast, he said.

Jaji is a symbolic target as it is home to the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, one of the country's most important military colleges, training Nigerian and foreign navy, air force and army officers.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Sunday's attack, but a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram has previously targeted Nigerian military institutions in the past.

The attack comes two days after a special military taskforce announced that it would be giving a total of $1.8 million in rewards for information that could lead to the arrest of top Boko Haram members.

The twin blasts also came a month after another church was attacked in the city of Kaduna, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) away from Jaji.

In that attack, a suicide bomber rammed an SUV loaded with explosives into St. Rita's Catholic church holding Mass on Oct. 28 in Kaduna, killing at least seven people and wounding more than 100 others, authorities said.

The killings sparked instant reprisals in a city with a history of religious violence, leaving at least two more people dead.

Churches have been increasingly targeted by violence in Nigeria. In Kaduna state, there were church attacks on three weekends in a row in June. These attacks and the ensuing reprisals left at least 50 people dead.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the June attacks, but nobody has claimed responsibility for the latest attacks ? last month and Sunday ? which have again rocked the volatile state.

Kaduna state sits on Nigeria's dividing line between its largely Christian south and Muslim north.

Cash is King in Emergency Situations

Cash is King in Emergency SituationsMany people don't regularly carry cash anymore, but as Hurricane Sandy just proved it can be essential when the power is out, no stores are accepting credit or debit cards, and no electricity means no functioning ATMs.

Consumer Reports magazine's weblog recommends keeping a small stash of cash in your home that is always there in case of emergency. Depending on how much you want to keep on hand you may consider investing in a safe, using a keychain cash can, a DIY book safe, or just keeping a folded dollar bill in your phone case. I'd recommend keeping at least enough for a tank of gas and a few meals. If you know that a hurricane or winter storms are headed your way and don't normally keep cash consider taking out enough from an ATM to get you by for a few days in case of a power loss. Life Insurance Can Be a Tool for a Happier Marriage

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Great Recession impacted 8.8 million Americans with a loss of jobs. Many of those people affected were married couples who have families, mortgages, dreams, and plans for the future. Rebounding from this crisis is going to take a long time, and married couples can either sink or swim when this kind of financial crisis impacts their lives.

Couples argue more about money than any other topic. They argue far less about sex, in-laws, chores, and their children than they do about money. However, what many happily married couples know is that marriage is more than just a romantic relationship. It is a lifelong partnership that equally embraces business and romance in a net that unites people in trust.

weddingOne of the things that young couples can do to be better prepared for financial crises before they arise is to have some kind of safety net in place. Life insurance is an affordable, easy, and practical safety net for married couples to consider when making contingency plans for the future.

However, the biggest hurdle that married couples might have in broaching the topic of life insurance and money matters in general is the difference in their personalities. It is something of a truism that spenders tend to be attracted to savers. It might be a case of opposites attract, but the result in many people?s relationship with their spouses is a kind of polarization when it comes to money. Especially if money matters are not regularly discussed, money issues tend to drive couples more into their corner.

Our financial personalities are shaped long before we become adults, and the onset of adulthood does not suddenly bring about a mature relationship to money. This polarization is one of the main reasons that married couples tend to argue about money so much. Over-spenders compensate for their anxiety by spending more, and savers take out their frustration on an over-spender as the source of all their own increased frustration and anxiety over money. Even worse, couples can adopt a cone of silence around money issues as a shield for their respective sense of shame and guilt for a perceived inadequacy around money matters. This cone only gets involuntarily broken when a financial crisis erupts.

Marriage is as much a partnership as it is a romance. Couples need to respect and trust one another in order to succeed in life financially. Planning is the key to this success. Scheduling regular meetings to discuss money matters like bills and long term goals can be a great way to begin talking about the return of premium life insurance pros and cons. Couples both have insurable interests with regard to their marriage, and it is never too early to consider life insurance.

Married couples make large purchases like mortgages on homes and cars, and a life insurance policy can provide a beneficiary with money to settle the mortgage or to invest it as they see fit. If only one spouse is working, life insurance gives the other spouse some financial security to pay for bills, costs of living, and funeral costs while they search for employment. Any attempt to bring up a discussion of life insurance with a spouse should focus on its practicality, but since money is an emotionally and symbolically loaded topic, it should be discussed with mutual respect and love.

Buying life insurance can have the added benefit of strengthening a relationship. There is a great deal of happiness and freedom that comes from having financial security. Not having a nest egg in the future to guard against accident or death can leave a pall on the relationship. Depression is common in people having financial difficulties, and depression in either spouse can have a negative effect on the abilities of spouses to communicate openly and honestly with one another.

Depression can also exacerbate problems people have when dealing with money, making them more likely to make impulse buys. Purchasing life insurance gives couples a milestone to celebrate in the context of their relationships. Besides wedding anniversaries, there are not many socially identifiable financial markers for long term marriage goals. Creating one?s own financial milestone through a life insurance policy can be empowering to a couple, and it provides a place where couples can agree on the value of money and financial security, thus mitigating the conflicts that couples can have with their money personalities. Savers, for instance, have the benefit of knowing that they are setting aside money for a future rainy day, and spenders know that should a crisis occur they will be able to take care of all their costs.

When handled through a financial expert, life insurance is easy to purchase, and with term life insurance policies, it is cheaper than universal or whole life. The important thing about life insurance is that it gives married couples a clear sense of their worth to each other, and it provides a great safety net that can be paid into over many years and used to meet the sometimes unpredictable realities that life throws at us. Marriage takes a lot of work and is built on mutual respect for the freedom that couples should have to be themselves. Life insurance can make that financial work a little easier and a little less burdensome.
