The wraps on the new GoggleWorks apartments on Washington Street in Reading will be long gone by early summer. In the meantime, the $16.7 million building remains swathed in plastic to keep workers warm.

The plastic also has been covering up an unusual construction process based on a metal framing system. Instead of a typical structural steel framework filled in with masonry blocks and wooden planks, it has prefabricated metal framing and walls that stack in place made by ClarkDietrich Building Systems, an Ohio-based provider of steel construction products and services.

Eric Burkey, president of Reading-based Burkey Construction Co., the project?s general contractor, said the walls are set in place and the cold-formed steel joists and metal deck are set before the walls are placed on the floor above. The wall panels literally sit one on top of the other and carry through the overall height of the building.

?This kind of system has been around for a while,? Burkey said. ?It just hasn?t been used a lot.?

He?s using it because of cost considerations.

Lee Olsen of Olsen Design Group Architects in Bern Township, architect for the project, initially planned to use concrete, but that would have cost more than was budgeted, and he was asked to provide less expensive options.

Olsen sent investigative teams, including Burkey and retailer Albert R. Boscov of the nonprofit Our City Reading, to research projects using ClarkDietrich structural systems in Cleveland and Baltimore. He was happy with what he heard.

?While the wall thickness is less than with traditional building materials, the sound rating is the same,? Olsen said.

Burkey said he likes it because it?s environmentally friendly: There is minimal waste with steel products designed to mesh, and it?s recyclable.

Olsen said the switch saved $800,000 to $1 million.

Nader Elhajj of the Mid-Atlantic Steel Framing Alliance in Fairfax, Va., said there are many advantages to a metal framing system, not just costs.

?It?s totally insect- and termite-proof,? Elhajj said. ?Another great aspect is that it?s pre-punched for both electrical and plumbing work, making it much easier for subcontractors.?

He echoed Burkey?s comments about recyclability, saying that steel has no memory and can be reused multiple times.

Burkey said he never worked with this kind of system before and acknowledged there are some drawbacks.

?It?s not flexible,? he said. ?Design changes are extremely hard. You can?t move a door easily. But I would use it again.?

Since everything stacks and meshes in place, Burkey said, it?s not suitable for low office buildings with large open spaces. Spaces should be fairly small and repetitive.

He also considered a similar system manufactured by Hambro but went with ClarkDietrich because of its lower cost.

Burkey said the proposed convention center hotel in the 700 block of Penn Street also will use this type of building process.

Burkey hired a subcontractor?s assembly crew from Pittsburgh that already knows the process. These workers travel to ClarkDietrich project sites and don?t need any training. He has hired local workers for the GoggleWorks project, but they?re not assigned to jobs unique to the system.

Jim Collins, ClarkDietrich?s director of marketing, said one of the system?s largest advantages is fire protection, especially between apartment units or hotel rooms.

While business is only half of what it was pre-recession, Collins said the metal framing industry mirrors the construction industry, with business gradually starting to increase.

?We?re starting to see an uptick,? Collins said. ?Good things are on the horizon. There will be a gradual return to previous sales levels. We?re picking up again.?

The apartments, with 59 units on six floors, will officially be named Sen. Michael A. O?Pake GoggleWorks Apartments, honoring the late state senator from Berks County. They will be managed by the Reading Housing Authority.

Shane Connaughton will be reading as part of the Lunchtime Reading series at the Irish Writers? Centre today?Friday, 24th February at 1.05pm.?The Lunchtime Readings will run on Fridays throughout February and March in the Irish Writers? Centre and are organised in association with Poetry Ireland. The readings will be alternating between prose and poetry, offering audiences the chance to experience a wide-range of literary talent.

How and why did you begin writing? The how and the why are identical twins. A mixture of aloneness and wanting to express that so I could fill my head with friends. Also an urge to tell the world about the people I met.

You have written screen plays (of the most famous being ?My Left Foot?) and novels. If you have completed a script and your next project happens to be a novel how do you make the mental/intellectual switch between the two genres? Is there one side of the brain for screen writing and one for the novel? It?s like a cobbler going from a clog to a shoe. Or a boot to a high heel. It?s just part of the job. It?s Grub Street out there. So you have to do what pays. One can illuminate the other. You paint in words, you paint in images. You write about a mirror or you look into it.

On screen writing you have suggested elsewhere that a treatment for a film-movie script should shorter rather than longer. How long? What would be the maximum words in terms of the ?sell? for a treatment? Two or three pages are enough for starters. If it grabs the attention they?ll ask you for more. One good page is better than ten dud pages.

When it comes to screen writing what makes the best balance between scene description and directions, and the dialogue? Some Producers want everything explained. Others want the minimum. Tell it simply so a child can get it. Never underestimate the stupidity of a Producer. He understands the market maybe. Not the art. He can sell your beast at the Mart. He can?t feed it beforehand. Dialogue is ?ear?. Listen to people at the bus stop. In the street. They talk crooked, not in straight lines.

You are a Cavan man! In terms of films and books do the ?Border Counties? get enough attention in Irish culture given that they seem to be a hinterland between the burgeoning conurbations of Greater Dublin even up along the eastern coast and life in Northern Ireland? Is hinterland a rich seam to mine stories from? Probably don?t get enough attention. The capital always comes first in every country. Except Australia. (Canberra?) You had Brendan Behan and Patrick Kavanagh. Who was the best? The Border does have a great edge. But no matter where you come from, edge is the thing you need. A good edge ? you can cut with it. The Border country is my territory. I love juggling two realities instead of one. Two languages, two religions, two sets of politics?But then London is my country too. So is Stoke-On-Trent. So is anywhere I?ve ever lived.

You have ?crossed the line? from actor to director, and possibly back again. Did you find it easier to script and direct having treaded the boards? Yes. Acting is a great way to learn how to write. You see how it works. It?s all about an audience. Never forget your audience. Even if it?s only your Auntie Mary. (Or your Uncle Mary)

Corrie fans will be delighted to hear that you acted in Coronation Street! This brings up the apparent divide between ?popular? and so-called ?high culture?. Do you think budding screen writers should be eclectic? Should they be prepared to script for a soap as much as to the art house cinema project they have been obsessed with since they were teenagers? Just remember ?ART? hasn?t got a capital ?A?. Especially in theatre. A writer should be prepared for anything. If he/she/it wants to make a living from it. There aren?t any rules. If you see yourself as an art house person ? go for it. Beckett did. If he needed the money though, I?m sure he?d have turned out scripts for Coronation Street. Shakespeare did it for both. The Court as well as the Groundlings. Obsession is a good word.

What is your next project and what does it entail? My next project is the filming of A Border Station. Hopefully this year in Cavan. But I?m also acting in my own play ? The Pitch. That?s a Cavan play but it?s based on Philoctetes. I?m also writing the follow-up to A Border Station.

What advice do you have for budding screen writers? There are, as I said before, no rules. If it works ? anything goes. If it doesn?t ? you?ve broken the rules. Be true to yourself. If you have a story, write it, get your friends to act in it, get, borrow, steal a digital camera, it?s so much cheaper nowadays and getting cheaper. If you have a play, put it on over a pub or in the street, or?anywhere. You CAN send it to theatres. But most of those places are run by educated morons. Don?t give up. Be wary of ex-teachers. And Cert X Producers.

Philosophical pragmatism, like American Legal Realism, has various strains but the most characteristic ones are motivated by philosophical concerns different from the intellectual concerns that motivated Legal Realism. Legal Realism reacted to classical legal thought, pragmatism reacted to Cartesianism. While there may be some parallels between classical legal thought and Cartesianism ? and hence possibly some between schools of thought reacting to each ? classical legal thought and Cartesianism occupy two different planes. The battle between classical legal thought and American Legal Realism is internecine. Philosophical pragmatism bears on that fight more globally. If pragmatist philosophical methods and tenets bear on law, legal theory, and legal practice, it will bear on both classical legal thought and American Legal Realism, the objects of both those schools of thought.

Philosophical pragmatism draws our attention to the significance of social practices of all kinds. It does not advocate any one way of construing a social practice; indeed, that sort of methodological unitarianism would be inconsistent with the pragmatist approach to understanding. What pragmatism teaches those interested in law and legal practice is that legal theory is not prior to legal practice; and that legal practices themselves should be the point of departure for giving any more generalized account of how the practice works.

Most previous legal scholarship on law and pragmatism misses the point about philosophical pragmatism's commitment to fallibilism rather than skepticism, and therefore fails to consider the significance of this shift for using pragmatism to understand legal practices, especially adjudication. This is highly evident in the conventional treatment of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr and Benjamin Cardozo as both pragmatists. Using a representative decision of each, I argue that Holmes is more a radical skeptic than a pragmatist, while Cardozo works in true pragmatist fashion.

"We found a strong correlation between the temperature at which nacre was deposited during the life of the mollusk and water temperature," explains Pupa Gilbert, a UW-Madison professor of physics and chemistry and the senior author of the new JACS report. "All other (temperature) proxies are based on chemical analyses and the relative concentration of different elements or isotopes. This could be our first physical proxy, in which the microscopic structure of the material tells us the maximum temperature and maximum pressure at which the mollusk lived."

The new study was conducted using mother of pearl from modern mollusks, but Gilbert notes that nacre is widespread in the fossil record going back 450 million years. If the techniques used by the Wisconsin group can be applied to fossil nacre, scientists can begin to accurately reconstruct a global record of ancient environments and environmental change.

"If the correlation holds, we would have a thermometer that goes back in time, a paleothermometer of how hot or cold water temperatures were when the nacre formed," says Gilbert.

The material also holds a distinctive signature?the thickness of the nacre layers ? for the water depth at which the material was assembled by a mollusk, potentially providing even more insight into environmental conditions of the present and past.

"These are two independent parameters, measured by different aspects of nacre structure," the Wisconsin physicist explains. "The maximum temperature can be measured by how disordered the nacre crystal orientations are, while the maximum pressure can be taken from the thickness of the nacre layers."

Working with UW-Madison graduate student Ian C. Olson, the lead author of the JACS report, Gilbert subjected nacre from eight mollusk species from different environments to a technique capable of mapping the orientation of nacre crystals. From the different shells, they observed uneven thicknesses, widths and angles of the crystalline "bricks" that, together with an organic mortar, are laid down by the mollusk to form mother of pearl.

"We wondered why the shells were so different and concluded that the key parameters to test were the environmental ones, including maximum, minimum and mean annual temperatures as well as maximum and minimum water pressure, which depends on water depth," says Gilbert.

Comparing the structural maps of nacre from the different mollusks and environmental data from the places where the animals were collected, Olson, Gilbert and their collaborators found an extremely high correlation between the microscopic structural characteristics of their nacre specimens and the temperature and pressure data obtained from the various environments where they were collected.
