From start to finish, the 400-meter individual medley was Lochte's race. He could have swum with the gold medal already around his neck, and he still would have finished first. By a lot. Then came Phelps, 0.34 seconds later.?

Of all the sportsmen who walk this earth, Phelps is perhaps most deserving of a mulligan and a measure of patience from fans. Then again, the man laboring in Lane 8 didn't look remotely like Michael Phelps.

Brazilian Luca Martin got a good look from Lane 7 next door, and he didn't think it looked like Phelps, either.

"It's so strange to see Phelps like that," he said.

Phelps didn't disagree. "I was trying to find a gear that I couldn't find," he said. "I have swum better races, and I have been better prepared. It was a very frustrating finish."

It is that second-to-last sentence that must raise some doubts about Phelps's assumed victory lap in London. "Better prepared" could have been engraved into each of his 14 gold medals. Yes, Phelps has uncommon physical gifts, but his greatest gift is his mental strength ? and that was founded upon his certainty that his rigorous training meant he never would have to utter, "I have been better prepared."

In May, when Phelps was still trying to prove that he could come back from several indifferent years of training, he told a media summit: "Hopefully, I didn't get too far behind that I can't make up the difference."

He appeared to dispel those doubts at Olympic trials, when he beat Lochte in three of four races ? and while he lost to Lochte in the 400 IM then, too, he raced it in 4:07.89. Had he matched that Saturday, he would have taken silver by nearly a second.?

So what happened?

Before the Games began, Phelps said how he was going to enjoy these Games. "I'm having fun," he said in a news conference. "It's a question of: How many toppings do I want on my sundae?"

Perhaps Phelps, the ultimate grinder, can't turn into a cherries-on-top sort of swimmer overnight.?

Before the Games began, Phelps said he was going to have to manage his emotions in this, his last meet. "There are going to be the last competitive moments in my career," he added. "It's big."

Court cuts China activist's jail sentence: lawyer

A Chinese court handed Ni Yulan, the disabled activist jailed earlier this year, a two-month reduction in her prison term on Friday, but upheld a conviction for "picking quarrels", her lawyer said.

The court cut Ni's sentence to 30 months in jail after overturning a fraud conviction, but rejected her appeal against the second charge, her lawyer Cheng Hai told AFP by telephone after a hearing in Beijing.

The court also rejected an appeal against Ni's husband Dong Jiqin's conviction and sentence to two years in jail on the same charge of "picking quarrels", Cheng said.

"At least Chinese law is improving. If we all persevere, there can be results. (But) this is basically a fake case," Cheng said, adding that he planned to appeal again.

Lawyers for Ni and her husband have said all along that the charges were trumped up to silence the 52-year-old rights defender, who is confined to a wheelchair due to injuries during an earlier stint in jail.

She and her husband were detained in April 2011 as China rounded up hundreds of activists amid calls for protests akin to the Arab Spring popular revolts that erupted across the Middle East.

The activist spent much of the trial in December lying on a bed in the courtroom due to her poor health and needed a respirator to breathe.

Her sentencing in April this year sparked an international outcry, and the United States and European Union have both called for her release. The US said Friday it was "deeply concerned" about the case and Ni's health.

Trained as a lawyer, Ni began providing legal aid to residents facing home demolitions after her own courtyard home in central Beijing was requisitioned in 2001.

The next year she was sentenced to one year in jail for "obstructing official business" and disbarred as a lawyer.

After her release she was confined to a wheelchair, which the rights group Amnesty International blamed on abuse while in prison.

In 2008, Ni and her husband began living on the street after their home was demolished, and Ni received another jail sentence of two years for "harming public property".

After a brief period of freedom in 2010, police relocated her and her husband to a hotel and later requested them to pay the 69,000 yuan ($11,000) bill, which they refused to do.

Ni attended Friday's hearing, as did her daughter Dong Xuan, 27, who was placed under effective house arrest after her parents' trial and remains under police surveillance.

There was a heavy police presence outside the court in Beijing. Dong told AFP by telephone security officials had driven her away from the area immediately after the hearing, possibly to prevent her from speaking to journalists.

"They wouldn't let me answer the phone," which had rung two dozen times, she said, speaking while she ducked away briefly from the officials minding her.

Dong said it had seemed unlikely during the hearing that the convictions of picking quarrels would be overturned because her parents' requests to see the evidence for those decisions had been refused.

The lawyer Cheng said Ni's condition remained poor but had improved since her last appearance in court, and she was able to sit up in her wheelchair during the hearing rather than having to lie down.

Before the appeal hearing, he said he had submitted witness statements from the alleged fraud victims to support the legal challenge.

"They have not only provided written testimonies that they donated the funds voluntarily and were not defrauded (but also) video recordings," he said.

Cheng said he had filed in May separate lawsuits against the Beijing district security bureau and court that had dealt with Ni, but had not heard any news about those cases.

Representatives from nearly a dozen Western embassies waited outside the courthouse on Friday waiting to hear the results.

Romney resume from 2002 in focus amid Olympic rift

LONDON (AP) ? On a trip already marked by misstep, Mitt Romney has an Olympic history that could prove problematic: His stewardship of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City was not without controversy.

Romney and his wife, Ann, are set to attend the opening ceremony at the Summer Games on Friday, an event that punctuates the first leg of a three-nation tour that will take him to Israel and Poland. It's the first international swing for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who has crafted an itinerary designed to showcase his diplomatic skills and political strengths.

The Olympic appearance carries special significance for Romney. His political career was born out of his leading role at the Salt Lake City Games, which were plagued by scandal before he was tapped to take over.

"I can't resist the pull of the beginning of the Olympics here," Romney told reporters Thursday. "My experience as an Olympic organizer is that there are always a few very small things that end up not going quite right in the first day or so ? these get ironed out and then when the games themselves begin and the athletes take over, all the mistakes of the organizing committee ? and I made a few ? all of those are overwhelmed by the many things that the athletes carry out and by the spirit of the games."

Romney's comments were aimed at downplaying his earlier suggestion that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials.

Prime Minister David Cameron said Romney and other doubters would "see beyond doubt that Britain can deliver." London Mayor Boris Johnson told tens of thousands gathered in Hyde Park: "There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready. Are we ready? Yes, we are!"

Amid the uproar, Romney met privately with Cameron, afterward concluding, "I expect the games to be highly successful."

The negative attention distracted from Romney's push to highlight the U.S.-British bond and bolster his foreign policy credentials as he auditions for the world's most powerful elected office. The Olympic focus also brought fresh attention to his actions in Utah a decade ago.

"The country is in need of a turnaround. The Olympics was a turnaround," Romney told CNN in an interview broadcast as London slept early Friday morning. "The attacks that come by people who are trying to knock down my business career, or my Olympic experience, or our success, those attacks are not going to be successful."

Such attacks have been plentiful in recent months. Democrats and even some Republicans have criticized Romney for taking credit for the 2002 games' success while relying on federal funding to help cover costs as the Salt Lake Olympics sought to recover from financial mismanagement and corruption.

"One of the things he talks about most is how he heroically showed up on the scene and bailed out and resolved the problems of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games," Rick Santorum, now a Romney supporter, said in February when he opposed Romney for the GOP nomination. "He heroically bailed out the Salt Lake City Olympic Games by heroically going to Congress and asking them for tens of millions of dollars to bail out the Salt Lake Games ? in an earmark."

Romney took over the games in 1999 after its leaders were accused of sending money to members of the International Olympic Committee to help Salt Lake City win the games.

By Romney's account, the government spent about $600 million helping the Salt Lake Olympic Committee. An additional $1.1 billion was planned for projects like roads and bridges, infrastructure improvement projects that the government probably would have paid for eventually, though the timing of the games may have sped up the construction.

Romney has made himself the very public face of the effort, claiming that he personally cut millions from the budget, wooed major companies and won sponsorships himself and pulled the whole endeavor back from the brink of failure. His record in Salt Lake was the cornerstone of his run for governor in Massachusetts, a campaign he announced in March 2002, just weeks after the games concluded.

Romney, who promises to slash federal spending if elected president, rarely acknowledges the federal support for the 2002 games on the campaign trail. His aides say much of it was for increased security costs after the 2001 terrorist attacks, which occurred about five months earlier.

But Romney doesn't mention the commitments the government had already made to cover costs associated with the games ? or elaborate on his role in persuading congressional appropriators and critics to give the games more money.

In the 2004 book he wrote about the games, "Turnaround," Romney outlined how he revamped the Salt Lake Olympic Committee's lobbying operations in Washington. He directed plans to hire experienced transportation lobbyists and wooed congressional leaders.

In one instance, Romney highlights how he made arrangements for different states to send experienced bus drivers to Utah. He helped arrange to pay them union wages, he wrote in the book ? and he persuaded the federal government to pick up the tab.

One of the lessons he learned: "If you work at it long enough, there is always another way to get the help you need in Washington," he wrote.

In London, first lady Michelle Obama is also scheduled to appear at Friday's opening ceremony, in addition to other events. She and Romney are expected to avoid the same venues.

Romney said he would attend at least one event in addition to the opening ceremony. The family has a horse competing in an equestrian event known as dressage. But Romney told Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg that he would prefer to watch swimming.

Why?

"That's just what's been arranged. It fits in the schedule," Romney said. "Swimming is always fun, and Americans typically do well in swimming."

Israel: Syria's Chemical Weapons Must Not Reach Militant Groups

JERUSALEM, July 24 (Reuters) - The Syrian government is still in full control of its chemical weapons stockpiles, a senior Israeli defence official said on Tuesday.
"The worry, of course, is that the regime will destabilise and the control will also destabilise," the official, Amos Gilad, told Israel Radio.
But he added: "At the moment, the entire non-conventional weapons system is under the full control of the regime."
Western countries and Israel have voiced fears that chemical weapons could fall into the hands of militant groups as the authority of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad erodes.
Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak has said Israel would consider military action, if needed, to ensure those weapons did not reach Assad's Hezbollah guerrilla allies in Lebanon. Israel says Hezbollah, a bitter enemy, has some 70,000 rockets in its arsenal.
On Monday, Syria acknowledged for the first time that it has chemical and biological weapons and said it could use them if foreign nations intervened in the 16-month-old uprising against Assad's rule.

Oil giant CNOOC to buy Canada's Nexen for $15.1B

SHANGHAI (AP) ? China moved Monday toward its biggest overseas energy acquisition as offshore oil and gas giant CNOOC Ltd. announced an agreement to buy Canadian producer Nexen Inc. for $15.1 billion.

The deal faces scrutiny from the Canadian government, which has rejected foreign interest in the past over worries about the country's natural resources industry.

CNOOC and other big state-owned Chinese energy companies have increased purchases of oil and gas assets in the Americas as part of a global strategy to gain access to resources needed to fuel China's economy. The companies have moved more carefully since CNOOC tried seven years ago to buy Unocal but was rejected by U.S. lawmakers citing national security fears.

Total acquisitions by Chinese energy firms jumped from less than $2 billion between 2002 and 2003 to nearly $48 billion in 2009 and 2010, according to the International Energy Agency. More times than not, the companies are paying above the industry average to get those deals done.

Indeed, the offer of $27.50 a share is a premium of 60 percent to Nexen's closing price Friday on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares rose 52 percent in $25.95. CNOOC expects the takeover to be finalized in the fourth quarter of this year, pending government approvals.

Calgary, Alberta-based Nexen operates in western Canada, the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea, Africa and the Middle East, with its biggest reserves in Canadian oil sands. It produced an average of 213,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day in the second quarter of this year.

The acquisition vastly expands CNOOC's holdings in Canada, where the company has already invested about $2.8 billion.

Nexen has faced numerous challenges over the past few years, most recently the troubled launch of its Long Lake oilsands project in northern Alberta in late 2008. The project has yet to come close to its design capacity of 72,000 barrels of bitumen per day due to a number of operational glitches, though performance has been improving in recent months.

CNOOC already had a 35 percent stake in Long Lake after it took over Nexen's erstwhile partner Opti Canada Ltd.

That previous partnership with Nexen makes CNOOC the optimal buyer for the company, said Sam La Bell, an oil and gas analyst at Veritas Investment Research.

"CNOOC is the natural buyer," he said. "We view this as full value for the deal. CNOOC already owns a minority position in Long Lake so they're in the best position to know that asset and what they're paying for it."

The companies already also had a strategic alliance that involved CNOOC investments in Nexen offshore wells in the Gulf of Mexico. Nexen says it produced 22,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the Gulf in 2011.

Besides oil sands, Nexen is also active in exploring for natural gas in shale rock formations. It owns about 300,000 acres of shale-gas blocks in the Horn River Basin in British Columbia.

The big Chinese oil companies are interested in developing shale-gas technology to find new supplies in China. In the U.S., where companies have solved the technological challenge of extracting natural gas from shale, a boom in production has meant cheap natural gas for homeowners, businesses, factories and utilities in the U.S.

Canada said the takeover offer will face a review by both its industry minister and the Competition Bureau, an independent law enforcement agency.

Industry Minister Christian Paradis said in a statement that he will review how the deal affects investment, employment, production and resource processing in Canada. He said the Competition Bureau will determine if the deal substantially lessens Canada's ability to compete in global markets.

He did not give a timeline for the reviews.

It will be a tough call for the government, which has to decide whether the deal is a net benefit to Canada as a whole and not just to shareholders, said University of Calgary economist Jack Mintz.

"It's going to be hugely political," Mintz said. He said CNOOC prepared its bid with an eye to regulators by offering a 61 percent premium to shareholders and stressing that it intends to keep the Calgary-based management intact.

The last time Canada faced a similar challenge ? when Australia-based BHP Billiton Ltd. launched a hostile takeover bid for Saskatchewan's Potash Corp. ? the government rejected the deal under pressure from Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall and corporate players. The Conservative government said the Potash takeover would not bring a net benefit to Canada.

But La Belle said he believes this deal will be approved because it meets the somewhat ambiguous guidelines of providing a 'net benefit' to Canada.

"With the net benefit test, you're looking at whether the asset is strategic for national interests, and it's hard to argue that this is for Canada, especially with the Long Lake project," he said.

He said the government will also look at whether jobs will be maintained in Canada and CNOOC said most, if not all jobs will be maintained, and that it will set up its regional headquarters in Calgary, increasing the company's spending to develop the Canadian company's energy reserves.

"They're not offering a lot more than stand-alone Nexen would have done, but they're also not taking much away, which factors into what the government takes into account in its approval process," said La Belle.

Wenran Jiang, a senior fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, said the Nexen deal is not the kind of surprise move that startled the U.S. with the Unocal takeover bid. "This one has been incremental and has been, of course, in an environment that's most likely to go through," Jiang said, noting that Beijing-Ottawa relations have been warming in recent years.

La Belle, who said the deal will also require U.S. approval, said he doesn't think this deal will instigate the same concern in the U.S. as Unocal did.

"It's a very different situation here because the Gulf assets that Nexen has in the U.S. are offshore, and they're minority interests for the most part, they don't operate them. There's no strategic infrastructure, Unocal had a bunch of onshore infrastructure and it was a U.S. company so the difference was selling a U.S. company directly to a Chinese buyer or selling assets that are already held by foreign companies. The assets that Nexen has are already outside of the U.S.," he said.

CALGARY ??? When the fear became almost unbearable, Rejeanne Taylor reminded herself that all she could do was put one foot in front of the other.

The two-time breast cancer survivor would walk to help cope with a disease that cruelly invaded her body twice ??? once in 1998 requiring a mastectomy, and again eight years later, when she endured rounds of gruelling chemo therapy and radiation.

???When you???re out there walking, you???re not a cancer patient. You???re a vibrant, capable, physically strong person,??? Taylor told the Herald. ???It was so important for me to have something beyond just the cancer in my life.???

Now cancer-free, Taylor walks to raise money and Sunday she added 40-kilometres to her running tally at the Weekend to End Women???s Cancers.

The annual 60-kilometre walk raised $1.8 million in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation, which funnels dollars toward research and cancer therapies at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and clinics across the province.

???It???s cancer. It???s mysterious and unpredictable, and that???s why we have to keep raising money for research. There???s too many children and too many young people that face this journey,??? Taylor said.

One of those young people is 25-year-old Ashley Hart.

A month before her wedding day last July, doctors told Hart that she had breast cancer.

She faces surgery for a double mastectomy on Aug. 7, but Sunday she crossed the finish line with a smile on her face, flanked by family, having walked 60 kilometres to raise more than $13,000.

???I don???t really know how to take it easy. I golfed through my chemo,??? Hart said. ???When you???re the person going through it, you just do what you have to do.???

When she was first diagnosed, Hart admits she felt angry.

???I was confused. At the time I wanted to know why it was happening to me and why it happened at 24,??? she said. ???But I got those answers later.???

Doctors told Hart that she was a carrier of BRCA1 ??? a rare, mutated gene responsible for increasing the risk for breast and ovarian cancers.

???I was more upset for my mom and my husband. My mom wished it was her and not me. That was upsetting.???

Organizers said the Weekend to End Women???s Cancers, the largest fundraiser for women???s cancers in Alberta???s history, has raised $47 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation since its inception.

???This year in Alberta, 1,950 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 270 with gynecological (cancers). Funds raised by The Weekend are put to use immediately, and support cutting-edge research, the development of new therapies and prevention programs for breast, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers,??? said Myka Osinchuk, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Close to a thousand Albertans participated in the two-day trek that ended Sunday.

KDDI unveils ICS 'Smart TV Box' for cable providers in Japan, available later this year (video)

We've seen a fair share of Android-powered set-tops in our time, but KDDI (with the help of Panasonic) has taken a slightly different entertainment route with its recently unveiled Smart TV Box. Similar to some Google TV boxes, which the Smart TV Box isn't, KDDI plans to bring this one to cable providers in Japan to act as the main unit in living rooms, with the testing phase set to commence as soon as next month. KDDI's Smart TV Box is powered by an undisclosed dual-core chip and feeds off of a tasty bite of Mountain View's Ice Cream Sandwich. As far as ports and other features, there's HDMI and three USB ports on board, while Ethernet (WiFi, too) keeps you connected and a built-in hard drive takes care of all your DVR needs. Like we said earlier, trial runs will start in August, but the Japanese company expects to have the brick officially up-and-running in a number of households later this fall. In the meantime, though, there's a soothing video for your viewing pleasure just past the break.

ASUS on Jelly Bean updates: Transformer Pad, Prime and Infinity all winners

ASUS today dropped word on its plans for Jelly Bean updates. The lucky tablet winners? The Transformer Pad, Transformer Pad Prime and the Transformer Pad Infinity. And ... that's it, so far. ASUS says it's still deciding on updates for other devices, but those guys are sure deals so far. Also, no word on when we'll see an update to Android 4.1, other than "in the coming months."

At ASUS, one of the key commitments we make to our customers is a relentless drive to deliver the best user experience. We constantly strive to achieve this goal through our ‘Design Thinking’ philosophy that includes regular software and firmware updates for our products.

We are pleased to announce that many of our tablet products are scheduled to receive an update to Android 4.1, Jelly Bean. The ASUS Transformer Pad, ASUS Transformer Pad Prime and ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity are all scheduled to receive Android 4.1 updates in the coming months. We will provide further guidance on our expected timeframes for these updates near their release.

We are still investigating Jelly Bean updates for other devices, but we are not in a position to confirm whether any other products will be eligible for an update at the moment.

As the old saying goes, "good friends make good lovers". As much as I'd like to test that idea out . . . I mean, I don't know if there's any truth to that, but since I have based all of my relationships on good friendships, I tend to agree with it. At the same time, logically speaking, you'd have to agree that the inverse of this statement is true, which means bad lovers make for bad friends. Being one of the few people who actually talk to most of his ex's and even considers some of them more than just casual acquaintances, I sometimes wonder if an ex can make for a good friend.

I was speaking to a friend earlier today. So was at a low because she found out that the person that she was dealing with was already in a relationship and she felt like a fool. As we continued talking, she said that her ex came over and provided a shoulder for her to cry on. I knew they still kept in contact because they have children together, but didn't know that after being divorced for a few years he had turned into her confidant and go-to guy. To get her mind off of her current circumstances, and to satisfy my own couriousity, I started asking about their friendship. She went on to tell me that the first year after the divorce she couldn't stand him. He would flaunt his new girlfriend in her face and still try to sleep with her at the same time. Then after a while, things started to change. He started coming to her with his problems and vice versa. Next thing you know they were good friends.

Like I said before, I think I'm in the minority when it comes to being friends with ex's, but at the same time, I think it's good to see that some people can overcome their bad relationship to be good friends. Then again, I think that if more people took the time to be friends before they become anything else the idea of being friends with an ex would become more common place. Then again, that's just this man's opinion.

These effects may vary according to your age, the connection between you and the perpetrator, the nature of the abuse, the duration and frequency of the sexual abuse, the degree of violence involved, the reactions of those around you to revelations of the abuse, and the help available to you. Many women and men are attempting to deal with the effects of sexual abuse, both recent and long ago occurrences.

Whether a sexual abuse happened to you recently or years ago, it has certain effects, some of which are common to a majority of the victims, others more specific to the victim's situation.You May Experience: Physical problems such as headaches, fatigue, sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancy, and various injuries. Psychological problems such as sadness, depression, guilt, feelings of anger and rage, fears, low self-esteem, shame, discouragement, suicidal thoughts, and self mutilation. Sexual problems such as a lessening of desire or becoming overly sexual, pain during intercourse, or disgust with sexual matters. Sexual addiction and deviant sexual behaviors are quite common among incest survivor victims.Difficulty in relationships with your spouse, friends and family. Frustration and anxiety which may arise from the judicial process, the trial and court testimony. Economic, social or family problems; difficulty at work, rejection by friends, a stay in a shelter or crisis center, loss of income. Dependency problems; drugs, alcohol, gambling or medication. Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.

All of the above mentioned symptoms can occur over a long period of time, beginning either immediately after the abuse or many years later.

What Triggers us to develop abnormal behavioral habits? Psychology is the science & study of the mind and human behavior. Its immediate goal is to understand behavior and mental processes by researching and establishing both general principles and specific cases.
