Is Joshua Ledet The Best 'American Idol' Singer Of All Time?

'He's really good and probably the best singer of the last three or four seasons,' one 'Idol' expert tells MTV News.
By Gil Kaufman

Just about every season of "American Idol" seems to have at least one: a singer whose talent is so impressive and complete that their weekly performances come off as effortless. Whether it's winners like Ruben Studdard, Fantasia or Carrie Underwood, or runners-up like Adam Lambert, Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson or Chris Daughtry, these finalists make it seem easy.

If you believe Randy, Jennifer and Steven, we are seeing one of those rare moments right now in the form of Joshua Ledet. The old-soul singer has been crushing it without fail just about every week on the show, with just a few missteps along the way.

"I've been doing this 11 years, and you're one of the best singers ever on this show. Ever!" Jackson said following Ledet's take on the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody." "No matter what goes down, you're one of the best singers ever on this show, and that is a big feat, that was incredible. Nobody could do that better." Tyler offered similar praise earlier in the show after Ledet pulled off a near-flawless cover of the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," telling Josh, "You've gotta be one of the top two best 'Idols' of all time." Hell, Lopez, who is 42, called Ledet one of the "best singers I've seen in 50 years!"

So, is Josh one of the best "Idol" singers of all time? Or just one of the best singer ever, period? We convened a panel of "Idol" experts and asked them to weigh in.

"Idol" blogger MJ Santilli said it is undeniable that Josh is a gifted singer, but she begged to differ with Tyler's claim that Ledet is one of the top "Idol" contenders. "Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard are, arguably, better singers," she said. "When Joshua is excited, he has the tendency to push his vocals to the breaking point. He's had missteps along the way -- his 'gospel' rendition of Billy Joel's 'She's Got A Way' was a hot mess of over-singing."

And, at just 20 years old, Santilli said she doesn't get the sense that Ledet has a complete handle on who he is as an artist. "In comparison to DeAndre Brackensick, who demonstrated knowledge of the greats that came before him, Joshua seems to have very little understanding of not only past masters, but current pop trends," she said.

Could it be that Josh's repeated claims that he's unfamiliar with the songs he's crushing is a savvy rope-a-dope move? Maybe. But as far as Entertainment Weekly staff writer Kyle Anderson is concerned, Ledet is "technically very good," but seems to be good at just one thing. "Even for a show that deals in hyperbole, that seems awfully hyperbolic," he said of the sky-high judge's comments on Wednesday night. "He's really good and probably the best singer of the last three or four seasons, mostly because the past few have tended toward people with gimmicks nor niches, so it's been a while since a pure voice has blown us away."

Former MTV News "Idol in 60 Seconds" host and "Idol" authority Jim Cantiello thinks the problem might be that while Ledet sings it very well, he excels at a style of music that just isn't very "now."

"The only pop artist who has success dabbling in retro-ish R&B tunes is Bruno Mars (and, by extension, Cee Lo, which Mars had a hand in). Yet Bruno injects a modern spin to his retro leanings and has the charisma and personality to back it up," Cantiello said of Ledet's throwback Otis Redding style of gritty R&B belting. "Joshua has only shown strength going REAL old school and typically has the presence of a sedated patient."

Despite the over-the-top raves from Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine and bestie "Little" Steven Van Zandt, Cantiello wondered whether the label had "a secret top-notch retro unit with the right songwriters and producers that could craft Joshua the perfect throwback album." There is no doubt that Ledet crushed it when he sang "To Love Somebody" and, earlier in the season, "When a Man Loves a Woman," but the issue, he said, is that nobody writes those kinds of songs anymore.

"In order to have a big radio hit, Joshua and Interscope would literally have to bring an entire genre back to life, and I'm not sure the personality-challenged Ledet is the one to start that movement," he lamented. Maybe the judges meant that Joshua is "one of the best young male soul singers to come out of the show, versus one of the best singers period," Cantiello speculated, ticking off a list of others who were more versatile and have massive voices (Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Melinda Doolittle, Fantasia).

Do you think Joshua Ledet is one of the best "Idol" singers of all time? Let us know in the comments!

Crystal Bell: 'Dancing With The Stars' Recap: Maria And Derek Are Perfect

Even though Donald Driver wanted to be the first celebrity to receive judge Len Goodman's first 10 of "Dancing With the Stars" Season 14, that honor went to another contestant -- Maria Menounos.

However, it wasn't an easy week for Maria and her partner Derek Hough. Despite having the most hysterical/annoying/maniacal laugh ever, Maria wasn't laughing during rehearsals when she passive-aggressively told Derek, "Sorry I'm not attractive enough for you."

Whatever tension Maria and Derek had in rehearsals, it carried over quite effectively into the ballroom as their "Romeo & Juliet" meets "Twilight" paso doble earned the duo the first perfect score of the season.

This week also marked the first time this season that the remaining couples split into teams to compete against each other -- Team Tango (Katherine, Roshon, Maria and Jaleel) and Team Paso (Melissa, William and Donald). Team Tango managed to squeak past with a victory, despite having a few less-than-stellar solos. Their choreography as a team, however, was great, earning each contestant 27 additional points.

Team Paso, on the other hand, relied on their shirtless men, which may have made Bruno happy, but Len wasn't as impressed. "If this was a body building contest, we would be screwed," said Roshon. "But lucky for us, Team Paso has to dance." Team Paso still managed to secure each member of their team 26 additional points.

Also, fans of Tristan MacManus and Karina Smirnoff got an extra-special treat, as the pros shared a dance while the couples were getting ready for their team dances. Tristan, black definitely is your color. Although, I could have done without all of that smoke.

Now, let's break down the individual dances:

William Levy & Cheryl Burke
Dance: Viennese Waltz
"It's classical week, but I'm not a classical guy. I was born and raised in Cuba on the streets. How is that classical?"

William and Cheryl danced the highly technical Viennese Waltz while young opera singer Jackie Evancho -- a.k.a. mini Katherine -- performed "Ave Maria." I can't wait to see Jackie on Season 25 of "Dancing With the Stars."

For once, he and Cheryl aren't relying on his looks, and the routine was purely rooted in their footwork and movement. Despite recovering from an injured ankle, William was still able to complete his turns and keep straight lines.

Bruno praised the emotions Levy invested into his classical effort -- "You felt it, you lived it" -- while Carrie Ann complimented William on his ability to tell a story with his dancing. As for Len? Well, he said that he wasn't transported to Vienna, but he definitely was somewhere in Austria.

Judges' score: 27 + 26 = 53

Maria Menounous & Derek Hough
Dance: Paso Doble
Despite having a rough rehearsal, Maria and Derek owned the ballroom tonight. Sure, the vampire theme may be a bit overplayed at this point, but for this routine, it captured Maria and Derek's love/hate relationship perfectly.

In their dramatic paso doble, the duo played the Montagues and Capulets, and although Derek is no Leonardio DiCaprio, the tension was perfect. For some reason, however, I was unaware that there was a "Romeo and Juliet and Vampires" book out there. Back on the dance floor, the anger builds with the music, and for the first time this season, Derek has choreographed an incredibly memorable piece -- similar to last season's "Psycho"-inspired tango with partner Ricki Lake.

Carrie Ann said that their performance was on fire, while Len praised it for being as "sharp as a razor and crisper than a Pringle." Unfortunately for Donald Driver, it looks like he won't receive Len's first 10: Maria and Derek earn the first perfect score of the season.

Katherine Jenkins, you better watch your back!

Judges' score: 30 + 27 = 57

Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd
Dance: Viennese Waltz
Last week, Len told Peta to push Donald even further, so this week, she created a "professional-grade routine" for the football player, incorporating reverse spins and one very awkward looking "fleckerl."

Like William and Cheryl, Donald and Peta have an opera singer performing live as they dance their Viennese waltz: Vittorio Grigolo. From the start, Donald has a great frame, and his movements have a sharp, clean quality. At the end, he spins Peta around the dance floor, and judging from the camera angle, it's tough to tell if they had a lift. Even Carrie Ann couldn't determine one way or the other.

Whatever Donald does on the dance floor, he tackles it with determination and athleticism. Len applauded Donald's footwork, while Carrie Ann praised his intensity -- lift or no lift.

Judges' score: 27 + 26 = 53

Roshon Fegan & Chelsie Hightower
Dance: Argentine Tango
After narrowly escaping the dance duel, Roshon admits that the past few weeks haven't been going his way and he's just desperately hoping that he gets out of this rut. To look more masculine during his tango, he enlists Val's help during rehearsals. He wants to learn how to be a man. Val tells him to lower his chin and focus his eyes in such a way as to be intimidating -- to truly lead Chelsie. That's the signature smoldering Chmerkovskiy stare.

Hopefully, he and Val listened to this song while they were practicing their manliness.

On the dance floor, instead of choosing a piece of classical music, Roshon and Chelsie dance to an instrumental version of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," which takes away from the overall classical theme of the night.

Len and Bruno both felt that Roshon needs more strength in his legs and footwork, while Carrie Ann, on the other hand, hugged Roshon, and telling the Disney star that he's back and praises his gravitas.

Did anyone else notice that "Dancing With the Stars" logo cut into his performance, or was it just my cable? Whatever the mess up was, I hope it doesn't hurt him when voting comes into play, especially since Roshon needs all of the votes he can get.

Judges' score: 25 + 27 = 52

Melissa Gilbert & Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Dance: Argentine Tango
The theme may have been classical, but Melissa's sheer, sparkly nightie was anything but classy. Seriously. What was that?

Melissa, along with her injured partner Maks, tackled Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," but it wasn't necessarily a peaceful marriage between the ever-changing music and the up-and-down movement. Judges Carrie Ann and Bruno criticized the duo for the amount of lifts in their routine, while Len felt that their Argentine tango lacked technique.

Maybe Maks should have let his little brother Val help him choreograph the routine too?

At this point in the competition, it's obvious that Melissa's dedicated fan base has saved her from the bottom two week after week, but now she's with six other stars who deserve to be here a heck of a lot more than she does. You've had a good run, Melissa, but I don't think it would be fair if you moved on to next week.

Judges' score: 21 + 26 = 47

Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas
Dance: Rumba
Katherine wanted to keep it classy on the dance floor, but as Mark put it, "You can't spell classical without a--." Unfortunately, for the Welsh opera singer, she kept it a little too sophisticated.

The pair danced a rumba to Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major," and although judge Len described it as "elegant," Carrie Ann felt the number lacked chemistry and Bruno needed a little more heat to get his "juices flowing."

Honestly, I thought that Katherine and Mark played it way too safe, and I'm going to agree with Carrie Ann on this one: There was absolutely no passion.

Judges' score: 27 + 27 = 54

Jaleel White & Kym Johnson
Dance: Viennese Waltz
After last week's incredible comeback, Jaleel just wants to keep that momentum going, but unfortunately for him, Kym choreographs a really complicated routine -- to the "Downton Abbey" theme. Yes, the "Downton Abbey" theme has lyrics. It's actually called "Did I Make The Most Of Loving You?" This all makes so much sense now. Consider your minds blown.

Honestly, I couldn't even concentrate on Jaleel and Kym's dance because all I could imagine was Mary and Matthew sharing this dance in the ballroom -- and doing it 10 times better. Matthew also looks better in uniform. Sorry, Urkel, but Matthew always wins when it comes to my incredibly fickle heart.

Not so surprisingly, Jaleel just doesn't nail it. His movements just aren't as clean and fluid as they should be, as Len criticizes. However, all of the judges praise the "airy-fairy" storytelling elements of the dance. More than any other routine, this was a perfect marriage between music and movement. Hopefully, Melissa was taking notes.

As a "Downton Abbey" fan, I was thoroughly entertained -- and slightly mesmerized.

Judges' score: 24 + 27 = 51

Tizen 1.0 Larkspur arrives, fuels your open-source phone dreams

Tizen screen captures

The unveiling of Tizen left many mobile open-source aficionados wondering when the OS would reach its all-important 1.0 status. The answer is now: the coalition between Intel, Panasonic, Samsung and a raft of carriers has posted the first non-beta release in both source code and software development kit forms. The finished versions of either carry new features to reward developers for the wait: SDK users get a new browser-based simulator and a faster emulator, while those scouring the source code will find new point-of-interest and route searching features in location-aware apps as well as WiFi Direct and more HTML5 support. About the only wait left is for an actual Tizen phone to ship.

Is Your Skin Spot Cancerous? The Skinny on Moles ? Be Better Guys

Is Your Skin Spot Cancerous? The Skinny on Moles

The importance of wearing sunscreen to prevent skin cancer has been drilled into your head since the day you were born. But you?re way too young to start inspecting yourself for iffy moles, right? Actually, say dermatologists, you?re not. Dr. Jessica Krant, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and founder of Art of Dermatology in New York City, says the time to start is now. ?If you get used to how your moles and skin look when nothing is wrong, you?ll be ready to notice changes over time,? she explains, adding that, though rare, ?skin cancer does occur in teens and even in children, so there really is no age too young to start knowing your skin.? But how can you ?know? your skin? When is a mole just a mole, and when is it a sign of something worse? To answer these questions and more, here are three healthy habits you should be using to keep tabs on your body?s largest organ.

No. 1: Get an annual checkup.
Make an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist for a complete head-to-toe skin cancer screening. For most people, this will become an annual event, but depending on your skin type and coloring, sun exposure, and family skin cancer history, you may need to go more often. ?Everyone is truly different, so your dermatologist should work with you to figure out the schedule that works best for your situation,? says Krant.

No. 2: Check yourself using the ABCDE?s.
In between dermatological visits, you need to inspect your own skin. In order to get to know what?s normal for you, Krant suggests looking at easy-to-see spots once a month. Less visible areas can be looked at every four to six months. Although cancers are more likely to develop in parts of the body that are more exposed to the sun, they can still form in areas the sun doesn?t see. That means a complete skin exam includes the bottoms of your feet, in between your toes, your scalp and your underwear area. ?Use a mirror to look at hard-to-see areas,? says Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research for the Department of Dermatology of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. ?Ask your wife or girlfriend to check out your back.?

What you?re looking for, says Zeichner, is the ABCDE?s of moles.

A = Asymmetry, when one side of the mole does not look like the other side
B = Border, when the border of the mole is irregular and not round
C = Color, when there are various shades of brown, black, blue, or white in the mole
D = Diameter changing (according to Krant, dermatologists used to warn against moles that are larger than a pencil eraser, but doctors now know that melanomas can be smaller)
E = Evolution, when the mole changes over time

Another general guideline, says Krant, is to search for anything that looks different from when you last saw it or that doesn?t look like most of the other marks on you. ?There are three main types of skin cancer,? she explains. ?Each is formed when a different skin cell type goes bad.? When a brown mole turns malignant, it forms melanoma, the least common but deadliest skin cancer. But there is also a type of melanoma that has no brown pigment; it can look pink or red and is easily overlooked. ?Basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer, can appear as a clear ?pearly? bump, a flat white scar-like patch, or a pimple-like sore that may bleed and heal and then bleed again,? says Krant. Squamous cell carcinoma often appears as a flaky, scaly red bump, or a small patch that looks like a rash but won?t heal.

No. 3: When in doubt, call a professional.
With all the different places on your body to check and all the different types of spots to look out for, it can feel overwhelming. Just do the best you can to keep track of your skin, and head to your specialist if you spy something that makes you uneasy. At the very least, he or she will reassure you that it?s benign. And if it isn?t, rest assured you did the right thing: All three types of skin cancers are potentially deadly, but they?re also curable if caught early.
