SILVER SPRING, Maryland (Reuters) ? Heart safety studies should be required for new obesity drugs, U.S. drug advisers said on Thursday, possibly adding a new hurdle to the drugs? approval. An advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted 17-6 that regulators should make companies conduct heart impact studies in order to sell their drugs in the United States, even if clinical trials do not initially show evidence of increased heart risk. ?Anti-obesity drugs have a bad track record of cardiovascular risk,? said Dr. ?

How to use the iPad Home button to navigate, access the fast app switcher, take a screenshot, and more

There's only one physical hardware button on the front of the new iPad so it's little wonder Apple has put it to work with several levels of functionality. While all the basic things are covered by the good old single click, there's a lot more, and a lot more advanced functionality hidden beneath that Home button using double and triple clicks and more.

Apple patents Siri-like system for controlling cameras, PMPs through a computer or smartphone

Image
"Siri, turn on the flash and take three pictures with my camera after waiting two seconds." Apple's intelligent voice control system has been wildly popular amongst consumers in the U.S., and abroad, but Siri could be making her way to other devices in the future, including iPods, cameras and other consumer electronics. "Okay, Rock God, I will take your picture in two, one..." A patent by Apple filed in 2010 but published today describes a scenario in which you could control a secondary electronic device using your voice, with all of the backend processing passing through a connected smartphone or computer. According to the patent:

One embodiment may include a first electronic device communicatively coupled to a server and to a second electronic device. The second electronic device may be a portable electronic device, such as a digital media player, that includes a voice user interface. The second electronic device may be capable of accurate speech recognition, but may not include additional computation hardware and/or software for training the speech recognition engine. As such, the bulk, weigh, and cost for manufacturing the second electronic device may be reduced, resulting in a more portable and affordable product.

In other words, you could have Siri-like control of virtually any device, with all of the required hardware and software residing on an iPhone or MacBook, linked with other devices over WiFi or Bluetooth. Voice control wouldn't be practical in all situations, but it could be enormously helpful for certain operations, like adjusting settings or reviewing images. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of images, you could simply say "Siri, show me pictures from last Thursday," and see exactly the shots you were searching for. As always, this is one of thousands of Apple patents, and it quite possibly may never come to fruition as described. But here's to hoping it will. "Siri, show our readers the patent application" -- you'll find it at the source link below.

Update: Well, it looks like we missed the mark a little bit here, as this is a patent application, not a granted patent. It's for a voice control system where a device receives voice commands and turns them into text using a speech-recognition algorithm received from a remote server -- which sounds an awful lot like Siri.

Spike Lee, latest celeb to practice reckless tweeting

Featured

20 hrs.

Many Egyptians are living without electricity or jobs, and soon, those who still do have access to power may also have to do without online ... Read more

21 hrs.

Spike Lee wasn't the first to retweet the erroneous address on Twitter blindly accepted by many as that of George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month. But the filmmaker's message -- sent last week to his 240,000 Twitter followers -- was the most viral.

Elaine McClain, 70, the owner of the misidentified house in Sanford, Florida, and her husband David McClain, 72, tell news outlets they're now "living in fear." The address spread on Twitter, accompanied by threats of violence, and the couple are now staying at a hotel "to avoid the spotlight and possible danger," reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Oh, and Mrs. McClain? She reportedly has a heart condition. Awesome.

So how did this happen? As The Smoking Gun breaks it down, Marcus Davonne Higgins, the 33-year-old Los Angeles man behind the bad address, confused McClain's son, George W. Zimmerman, who once lived at the address, with George Michael Zimmerman, the man who killed Martin. Higgins then blasted the address to the Twitter accounts of Will Smith, 50 Cent, LeBron James, as well as to Lee. But Lee is the only one who retweeted it.

The great big "WRONG!" here isn't the bad address, or whether Lee should research the info before he retweets. And as regrettable as it is, Lee can't be held accountable for giving conservative pundit Michelle Malkin more fuel for Trayvon Martin race baiting on her Twitter "news" site Twitchy. It's this: Celebrities have no business using their position of power and popularity on Twitter to incite a mob.

We decry it when members of 4chan's /b/board broadcast the phone number, address and other identifying info about young girls suddenly popular on the Internet. Here in the West, we're horrified by stories of China's Internet mob, "mobilized to root out, expose and shame people they perceive to be exhibiting corrupt or immoral behavior," sometimes resulting in real-world violence. It's equally not OK for U.S. celebrities to do the same.?

We saw this to a lesser degree last week when Alec Baldwin mustered a Twitter army against someone he claimed was harassing his girlfriend on the Internet. When a celebrity directs his fanatic legion against a person outside a position of power, that's straight-up bullying.

Posting on Twitter, Baldwin gave out the handle of the alleged?harasser, @scarfacemadam, whom he said "has entered the twitter-verse ONLY to harass my girlfriend" in a way "that is borderline threatening." He asked users to "go to her address and read just a few of her posts, and give her your notice of her behavior."

While many of the Twitter attacks against?@scarfacemadam didn't?compare to the jillions of ugly death threats tweeted by Justin Bieber fans on any given day, they weren't pretty. As we noted then,?if the troll harassing his GF really is as bad as he claimed, then it's way to fuel a psycho stalker, Alec Baldwin! Conversely, if the troll was just your run-of-the-mill Internet jerk (with or without diagnosable mental issues), then Baldwin just sent thousands of people in that troll's direction.?

As it turned out, the kerfuffle faded fast soon after the @scarfacemadam account went dormant. It could've been worse. It wasn't.

In Lee's case however, helping chum Twitter could've resulted in violence -- against an innocent elderly couple or a man yet to face the justice system -? as well as a jail sentence for any Lee fans who took his retweet to heart. ?

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Tell her to get a real job?on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.

Tips On How Working Moms Can Juggle Between Work And Family ...

How Work at Home Moms Can Get the Work Done

As if being a fulltime ma is not nerve-wrangling enough, add to this the fact that work at home moms still have jobs to fulfill all in a day?s work. The challenge is finding the time and the will to do all of these things without losing the insanity of the full time mom.

If you have to or want to work from home in Montreal, select at home part-time work that give you flexibility in schedule. Then, to get things done, work round the schedule of your kids. Your children are your first concern so you must grab each chance you get to be with them, play with them and attend to their needs.

Do work from your home during the down time of your youngsters. There are lots of Montreal work at home opportunities available that base the income not on the hours you input but on every task finished. This way, you aren't bounded by time but you may be as flexible about it as you want to.

Additionally , doing work from home Montreal is exhausting so don't wait to enlist some help if necessary. If your kids are the right age, you can ask them to set the table and store away their toys. Having work from home in Canada means you can't do all jobs at home so have your husband share with the chores. Part-time home work in Montreal will let you and your better half work together better to keep the house running.

As for the final information, let your things in your home be at it is even for a bit. If you have work at home to take care of, let your washing pile up even for just 1 or 2 days. Let dust gather a bit. These are excusable given your current situation.

For more information on openings to be had for work at home in Montreal please visit Claude Fullinfaw?s blog on topics about work from your home.

A Balanced Review of the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF by ...

There are many things that make the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF an excellent desktop. The form factor design is highly convenient because it means it doesn?t take up much room, making it ideal for home offices or even larger ones where you need to install a lot of desktops. Dell also makes it easy for IT departments to maintain and service these units because the OptiPlex line comes with a lot of business related services. We?ll be looking at quite a few of this unit?s features and services in this detailed review of the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF.

Dell OptiPlex 780 computers come equipped with Intel vPro technology, which is handy for many businesses. This advanced hardware technology allows remote access to computers, even if they aren?t on. It permits the owner or IT staff to maintain and monitor their computers from anywhere and it also includes security protocols to improve the safety of your system. The hardware and motherboard of the unit comes with these features built into it.

This technology is specifically designed for businesses but you can learn more about it from Dell. VPro technology can be highly effective for people who are worried about the security of their systems and who have a larger group of computers they need to take care of.

The Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF cannot be considered the cheapest unit available but it is more decently priced now than at first. In the beginning, the lowest price was $1,000. They are available at cheaper prices online nowadays.

When shopping for a Dell OptiPlex 780, which includes the USFF as well as other models, you have to be careful because they come in many varieties and they give you many choices for specifications. This series was designed to allow users or businesses to tailor them for their own needs, which means that if there are two sites selling the same model at extremely different prices, they probably feature significant differences in memory or hardware. So make sure you look at the specifications carefully before ordering one of these computers.

The Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF has quite a lot of positives, regarding design and performance, it isn?t the best option for every user. While this computer was designed specifically for business usage by Dell, some companies will find the graphics aren?t good enough. Similarly, this desktop is not designed for advanced gaming, meaning you might be better off looking for another option if you are a gamer. Even when it comes to regular, daily usage, the colors are a little pale and dull, which means that you will find the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF disappointing. Coming with standard Intel vPro technology, and focusing on security, the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF is a computer that you should seriously consider. As far as computers go, the appealing design is something that may be worth the extra couple hundred dollars. Overall, this is a great PC, with many features and benefits. It is definitely worth considering for a new office or home computer.

Made firmly for businesses, the actual Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF is a superb desktop computer. If you take a home business, or perhaps come with an office of your extremely own, using a computer which has USFF (ultra small kind factor) could possibly be ideal you, in case space is definitely an issue. There are numerous causes you might like to look at the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF, although, since we?ll discover within this review, it?s certainly not suitable for everyone.

Bodies found in home near SF's City College

Top news coming in to San Francisco today is about the bodies that have been found in San Francisco, near the City College.

News is that five bodies had been found in the house and there are 3 women and 2 men in those five.? The house is said to be located just across from San Francisco's City College in the Ingleside District.

"Well I hope they find out quickly what happened.? Although they say nobody else is at risk, it's still worrying for those who go to school at City College or those who live in the area," says San Francisco resident, Carol Atwood.

According to local San Francisco news station, ABC 7 News, the SF chief of police, Greg Suhr, said the public is not in danger.

The police have not said why this is the case and they have not said if the person who shot all five of the victims is himself or herself one of those who died. All the five victims were of Asian descent and it's believed they all resided in the home.

The bodies were discovered by a woman who entered the house early this morning. She left immediately and called the police.

"I want to assure the public that we don't believe we have anybody at large that is going to be doing random acts. We believe that this act was specific to this residence," said Suhr.

Black Keys (Sort Of) Retract Nickelback Dis

'There's much worse bands than Nickelback. Maybe,' drummer Patrick Carney said.
By Gil Kaufman

Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys

The Black Keys are very good at a number of things: rocking, filling arenas with fans and killer music,
writing incredible modern blues anthems and, occasionally, talking mad smack about other bands. But we may have finally found their one weakness: apologies.

Perhaps you recall a time not too long ago when Keys drummer Patrick Carney used the occasion of the duo's first Rolling Stone magazine cover story to take a swipe at Canadian rock juggernaut Nickelback
 , branding the "Bottoms Up"
act as "watered-down, post-grunge crap," among other unkind four-letter put-downs.

Well, the boys have had a change of heart, and in a recent interview with, ahem, MTV Canada, they apologized to the Alberta-bred rockers ... kind of. "I didn't mean to single them out actually," explained a laughing Carney. "It just came out. There's much worse bands than Nickelback ... maybe ... That was the worst apology."

"That was terrible, man," singer Dan Auerbach told his pal about his quarter-hearted mea culpa.

Asked if perhaps they were just music snobs, Carney said no, but Auerbach admitted that perhaps he was. "I think I am probably, a little bit ... I bet I am," he said. "I don't like bad music, but look, I've got a lot of friends and not one of them has a Nickelback record," added Carney. "I'm not a small minority."

What was that he said about the worst apology ever?

It got better, though. Without naming names this time, Carney elaborated that, "there are certain bands that make me embarrassed to be ..." to which Auerbach chimed in, "human?"

"On Earth," Carney clarified. "Like, they make me actually want to take a spaceship away. I want to get that far away from them."

Carney realized his "apology" might not wash, so when the interviewer asked whether it might get awkward if the Keys run into Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger at an industry awards show or other official function, he said, "he'd probably punch us in the face. I wouldn't talk to him."

Ashton Kutcher's Space Trip: What Other Adventures Does $200K Buy?

Kutcher could buy three trips to space for less than his per-episode fee on 'Two and a Half Men.'
By Gil Kaufman

Ashton Kutcher
Photo: Getty Images

When you're a single guy in your 30s making more than $700,000 per episode on a sitcom, there isn't much that's out of your financial reach. Wanna go out and buy a car today with cash? Go for it. Hell, buy two!

That and the actor's "whatever, dude" attitude might explain why British adventure billionaire Richard Branson announced on his blog this week that Ashton Kutcher, 34, has signed up to be the 500th space tourist on Branson's Virgin Galactic airlines. The suborbital spacecraft will give passengers a few minutes of weightlessness at a cost of $200,000 per ride.

"I gave Ashton a quick call to congratulate and welcome him," Branson wrote. "He is as thrilled as we are at the prospect of being among the first to cross the final frontier (and back!) with us and to experience the magic of space for himself."

Branson expects to launch a test flight beyond the Earth's atmosphere this year and possibly start sending commercial passengers into space in 2013 or 2014 on its six-passenger jets.

Of course, that's if things progress on track. In the meantime, we were wondering: What other kinds of outer-limits adventures or experiences Ashton could have while he's awaiting a shot at the great beyond?

» If he was feeling generous, Kutcher could buy a $6 copy of David Bowie's legendary way-out-there concept albumZiggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars from J&R for every undergrad, graduate student and professor (nearly 33,000) at his alma mater, the University of Iowa.

» Weightless flights already exist, thanks to the Zero G company, which offers a ride on its vomit comet for the low, low price of $4,950 plus tax. For that you get the flight, a Zero-G hat and a signed copy of "The Space Tourist's Handbook." The flight on the modified Boeing 727 takes you on 12 to 15 parabolic arcs that simulate the feeling of weightlessness. For his cash, Ashton could take 40 prep flights.

» Sure, being in space is cool, but what about owning a star? The Online Star Register gives space cases the opportunity to name a star for yourself (or a loved one) for just $48.95. That's more than 4,000 stars, dude!

» Traveling to space is, like, time consuming and there's always the possibility that you might, you know, embarrassingly lose your dehydrated space cookies on the way up (or down). Maybe a less messy option is staying at home and buying the "Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-IV)" on Blu-Ray for $89.99 from Amazon. Face it, it's $199,910.01 cheaper than Branson's rocket.

» We know Ashton loves Las Vegas, so he could easily afford to blow $3,500 for a weeknight or $7,500 for a weekend at the Hard Rock's 2,184 square foot Provocateur Penthouse Suite, complete with two bedrooms and "silhouettes of naked women in the shower [that] react and sway to entering guests' movements." Hell, for that kind of cash he could easily spend a month indulging his fantasies in the S&M-themed suite and still have plenty of walking around gambling money.

» Even if you're just going to space for a quick trip, you want to be as prepared as possible. One great way is to bone up by buying as much freeze-dried astronaut food as you can. I'd recommend the large, freeze-dried astronaut ice cream and fruit combo, which includes 3 Neapolitans, 3 ice cream sandwiches, 3 chocolate chocolate chip, 3 mint chocolate chip, 2 freeze dried bananas, 2 freeze dried strawberries, 2 cookies and cream sandwiches, 2 peanut butter space sticks and 2 chocolate space sticks for $72.77. Hell, you have time (and the money); just buy 2,748 of them.

» Kutcher has long been involved in a variety of charity ventures, including promoting the buying of mosquito nets to help defend against malaria in underdeveloped countries. For $200,000, Ashton could buy bed nets for 20,000 African children.

What would you do with $200,000? Leave your comment below!

Physicists simulate strongly correlated fermions

ScienceDaily (Mar. 18, 2012) ? Combining known factors in a new way, theoretical physicists Boris Svistunov and Nikolai Prokof'ev at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with three alumni of their group, have solved an intractable 50-year-old problem: How to simulate strongly interacting quantum systems to allow accurate predictions of their properties.

It could open the door to practical superconductor applications, as well as to solving difficult "many-body" problems in high-energy physics, condensed matter and ultra-cold atoms.

The theoretical breakthrough by Prokof'ev and Svistunov at UMass Amherst, with their alumni Kris Van Houcke now at Ghent University, Felix Werner at Ecole Normale Sup?rieure Paris and Evgeny Kozik at Ecole Polytechnique, is reported in the current issue of Nature Physics. The paper also includes crucial results of an experimental validation conducted by Martin Zwierlein and colleagues at MIT.

Svistunov says, "The accompanying experiment is a breakthrough on its own because achieving a few percent accuracy has long been a dream in the field of ultra-cold atoms. We needed this confirmation from Mother Nature."

Van Houcke adds, "Our answers and the experimental results perfectly agree. This is important because in physics you can always make a prediction, but unless it is controlled, with narrow error bars, you're basically just gambling. Our new method makes accurate predictions."

Physicists have long been able to numerically simulate statistical behavior of bosonic systems by mapping them onto polymers in four dimensions, as Richard Feynman proposed in the 1950s. "In a bosonic liquid one typically wants to know at what temperature the superfluid phase transition occurs," Prokof'ev explains, "and mapping onto the polymers yields an essentially exact answer."

But simulating particle behavior in strongly interacting fermionic liquids, like strongly interacting electrons in high-temperature superconducting compounds, has been devilishly elusive, he adds. "The polymer trick does not work here because of the notorious negative-sign problem, a hallmark of fermionic statistics."

Apart from mapping onto the polymers, Feynman proposed yet another solution, in terms of "diagrams" now named after him. These Feynman diagrams are graphical expressions for serial expansion of Green's functions, a mathematical tool that describes statistical properties of each unique system. Feynman diagrams were never used for making quantitatively accurate predictions for strongly interacting systems because people believed that evaluating and summing all of them was simply impossible, Svistunov points out. But the UMass Amherst team now has found a way to do this.

What they discovered is a trick -- called Diagrammatic Monte Carlo -- of sampling the Feynman series instead of calculating diagrams one by one. Especially powerful is the Bold Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (BDMC) scheme. This deals with a partially summed Feynman series (Dyson's development) in which the diagrams are constructed not from the bare Green's functions of non-interacting system (usually represented by thin lines), but from the genuine Green's functions of the strongly interacting system being looked for (usually represented by bold lines).

"We poll a series of integrals, and the result is fed back to the series to keep improving our knowledge of the Green's function," says Van Houcke, who developed the BDMC code over the past three years.

The BDMC protocol works a bit like sampling to predict the outcome of an election but with the difference that results of polling are being constantly fed back to the "electorate," Prokof'ev and Svistunov add. "We repeat this with several hundred processors over several days until the solution converges. That is, the Green's function doesn't change anymore. And once you know the Green's function, you know all the basic thermodynamic properties of the system. This has never been done before."

Can The Mentally Ill Sign Legal Contracts? | Bankrate.com

Steve McLindenDear Real Estate Adviser,
Can a mentally ill person on Social Security with a payee sign real estate contracts legally?
-- John W.

Dear John,
It's possible, depending on the type and extent of the mental illness. But you're on a rocky road here. As you can imagine, the potential for the abuse of the mentally ill in cases involving home sales is great, as is the possibility that a contract can be voided if signed by someone who is -- or was at time of signing -- considered to not have the "capacity to contract," as the legal world calls it.

Indeed, people who suffer from certain mental illnesses can still have clear understandings of the significance of their actions. For example, a person with a multiple personality disorder who is properly medicated and suffering no symptoms can often be considered to have clear understanding, as can a bipolar person who isn't showing symptoms. But what constitutes that "capacity to contract" has many gray areas, so I strongly recommend you (or whoever is involved in this) get expert consultation, legal advice or both before proceeding with any signings of contracts.

Also, laws defining mental competence vary by state. In most states, the degree to which a person understands the meaning and effect of a contract's wording, otherwise known as the "cognitive test," carries the most weight. However, in other states, an "affective test" is used to determine if a person understood the meaning and effect of the contract's wording, and the other party had reason to be aware of that person's condition. In others, a "motivational test" is used where courts determine if the person in question ever had the ability to judge whether or not to enter into a contractual arrangement.

Typically, the burden of proof in court cases pertaining to this is on the party who claims limited mental capacity. It is not unheard of for a court to decide against such an adult claimant who has not been legally declared incompetent and thus has no legal guardian. In cases of dementia, an ill person who has not executed a durable power of attorney, will or other proxy empowering a relative or another legal authority to handle contracts and other important decisions may have to wait for a so-called good day to read and sign. But sometimes those decisions can come under legal scrutiny by unhappy relatives or other interested parties.

In other words, it is important that all major decisions involving this mentally ill person be done aboveboard. The payee of that Social Security income you're talking about and his or her legal guardian may not be one in the same. It is that guardian who should be carefully considering any potential real estate agreements.

Good luck!
