I believe that we are seeing a new tort develop in popularity. 'Cyborg' Tissues: Merging engineered human tissues with bio-compatible nanoscale wires

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Harvard scientists have, for the first, time created a type of "cyborg" tissue by embedding a three-dimensional network of functional, bio-compatible nanoscale wires into engineered human tissues.

As described in a paper published August 26 in Nature Materials, a multi-institutional research team led by Charles M. Lieber, the Mark Hyman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Harvard and Daniel Kohane, a Harvard Medical School professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston developed a system for creating nanoscale "scaffolds" which could be seeded with cells which later grew into tissue.

Also contributing to the work were Robert Langer, from the Koch Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

The research addresses a concern that has long been associated with work on bioengineered tissue -- how to create systems capable of sensing chemical or electrical changes in the tissue after it has been grown and implanted. The system might also represent a solution to researchers' struggles in developing methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

Using the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, Bozhi Tian, a former doctoral student under Lieber and former postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane and Langer labs, and collaborator Jia Liu worked in Lieber's lab at Harvard to build mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 30 -- 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a reticular conformation.

The process of building the networks, Lieber said, is similar to that used to etch microchips.

Beginning with a two-dimensional substrate, researchers laid out a mesh of organic polymer around nanoscale wires, which serve as the critical nanoscale sensing elements. Nanoscale electrodes, which connect the nanowire elements, were then built within the mesh to enable nanowire transistors to measure the activity in cells without damaging them. Once complete, the substrate was dissolved, leaving researchers with a net-like sponge or a mesh that can be folded or rolled into a host of three dimensional shapes.

Once complete, the networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on two-dimensional layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

Using heart and nerve cells, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Using the embedded devices, they were able to detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the tissue, and to measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neuro-stimulating drugs.

Researchers were also able to construct bioengineered blood vessels, and used the embedded technology to measure pH changes -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments -- both inside and outside the vessels.

Though a number of potential applications exist for the technology, the most near-term use, Lieber said, may come from the pharmaceutical industry, where researchers could use the technology to more precisely study how newly-developed drugs act in three dimensional tissues, rather than thin layers of cultured cells. The system might also one day be used to monitor changes inside the body and react accordingly, whether through electrical stimulation or the release of a drug.

2. Read books together.
   The books don?t always need to be about foster care or adoption, but if you are looking for adoption or foster care related books,?here are a few I highly recommend. Reading these books has been incredibly helpful to Daffy. I can see her connect through the stories, gaining a sense that she is not alone in her experiences and learning to trust that we will finally be her forever family.
3. Cook together.
   Give them the chance to succeed. Daffy and the family support specialist baked muffins together during one visit and for the next week that followed, Daffy wanted to bake every single day. She was so proud of her new found ability! Spending time together in the kitchen allows for low intensity conversations. These are the moments that, one at a time, build attachments.
4. Touch!
   Touch adopted children as often and in as many ways as is appropriate based on their history- hugs, hand holding, foot massages, a pat on the back? just keep touching! Daffy & I have created our very own handshake-style good night kiss involving kisses, hugs, funny faces and handshakes! It?s something that she and I share that connects us?exclusively?to each other. She beams when other people see us do it, knowing that its unique just to her and me.
5. Play!
   Get down to their level and interact. This was really uncomfortable for me at first, but I learned some amazing things about how Daffy?s mind was working when I joined her in playing with her Little Pet Shop and other toys. I could see her hopes, dreams, and even fears play out through the way she played.
6. Enjoy family meals together.
   Our family never sat around the table together for meals before Daffy came to live with us. We were busy people with busy lives. We felt connected and this didn?t seem important to us. Once Daffy moved in, we saw this as a critical time together- a time when we?weren?t?meeting with a therapist or social worker, a time when there was no battle over homework and a time where the tv was OFF. This was (and is) time that we could spend all together sharing and getting to know each other.
7. Have realistic expectations.
   Above all, know the battle you are facing. Read books on attachment. Surf the internet for blogs of people that have gone before you in similar situations. Accept that adopted children will have attachment issues (whether it?s full blown Reactive Attachment Disorder or somewhere else on the spectrum). Understand that your adopted child will not attach to you in the same way that you will attach to them. Give them space when they need it, but don?t be afraid to push sometimes, too.?It?s hard to see the forest through the trees when it comes to attachment, but know that the work you are doing with your adopted child WILL pay off. You will see miraculous gains if you give it time.

The Navy SEAL who used a pseudonym to write an upcoming book on the raid that killed Osama bin Laden has been revealed.

Penguin Books?which is publishing "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden" on Sept. 11 on its Dutton imprint?said the author used the pen name Mark Owen and changed the names of his fellow SEALs for security reasons.

But according to Fox News, Owen is really Matt Bissonnette, a 36-year-old from Wrangell, Alaska, and former member of the so-called Team 6 that killed bin Laden in a May 2011 assault on the al-Qaida chief's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

"Owen was one of the first men through the door on the third floor of the terrorist leader's hideout," Penguin said in a press release on Wednesday, "and was present at his death":

The blow-by-blow narrative of the assault, beginning with the helicopter crash that could have ended Owen's life straight through to the radio call confirming Bin Laden's death, is an essential piece of modern history.

Owen said the reason he wanted to write the book?co-authored with Kevin Maurer?was to "set the record straight about one of the most important missions in U.S. military history."

Pentagon officials, though, say they have not vetted the account. Penguin said the publisher consulted with a former special operations attorney on its release.

"He vetted it for tactical, technical and procedural information as well as information that could be considered classified by compilation and found it to be without risk to national security," Christine Ball, a spokeswoman for Dutton, told The Associated Press.

"I haven't read the book and am unaware that anyone in the department has reviewed it," Pentagon press secretary George Little said Thursday.

Defense Department spokesman Lt. Col. James Gregory said that if the book reveals classified information about the raid, the Pentagon would turn the case over to the Department of Justice.

Since the bin Laden raid, "there has been a consistent and effective effort to protect the identity of those that participated in the raid," then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in 2011. "I think that that has to continue."

"No Easy Day" is not the first account of the bin Laden raid to spark controversy.

Last August, the New Yorker published "Getting Bin Laden," a gripping, 8,500-word play-by-play of the killing written by freelancer Nicholas Schmidle.

It was, perhaps, too gripping. Schmidle's sourcing came under fire from several critics who said that he and the New Yorker failed to disclose that Schmidle never spoke with the SEALs directly.

And the White House was criticized by lawmakers for its collaboration with the producers of "Zero Dark Thirty"?Academy Award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow's upcoming film on the bin Laden raid?over their possible access to classified material. The film, originally scheduled to open before the presidential election, was pushed back to Dec. 19 after Republicans complained it might affect voters.

DENVER (AP) ? A nurse who helped treat victims of the Aurora theater shooting in Colorado has drowned while on a family vacation in Iowa.

Forty-six-year-old Jennifer Gallagher, of Denver, died earlier this month. She went swimming in West Lake Okoboji the night of Aug. 6 and her body was found the next day.

There is no way to rerun the experiment to see what the world would look like had we not had the Gulf and Iraq wars. My guess is that the Gulf war was probably a smart move, the Iraq war,? maybe not so smart.

As for the continued military presence, it is money well spent if it is helping to maintain peace in the Middle East. As?Steven Pinker effectively argues, one key to reduced levels of violence is an effective police force:

By the end of the day, six banks had been robbed, a hundred shops had been looted, twelve fires had been set, forty carloads of storefront glass had been broken, and three million dollars in property damage had been inflicted, before city authorities had to call in the army and, of course, the Mounties to restore order.

In my neck of the woods the ?No War for Oil?? bumper stickers are typically found on cars burning biodiesel because most biodiesel stations here give them away to promote their product. So, are these people really more concerned about world peace than the rest of us, or are? they just victims of marketing?? I cede the point that if it were not for oil (and Israel), our elected officials might do nothing to prevent a Middle East version ofDarfur, but would that be a good thing?

Japan to deport Chinese activists after island landing

BEIJING/TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan has decided to deport Chinese activists who landed on a disputed isle at the heart of a territorial row, Kyodo news agency reported on Thursday, a move that could ease tension between Asia's two biggest economies.

The feud over the islands in the East China Sea has frayed relations between the two Asian neighbors, long bedevilled by the legacy of Japan's wartime occupation of much of China and contemporary rivalry over resources and regional clout.

China had earlier on Thursday renewed its call that the detainees be released "immediately and unconditionally".

Wednesday's landing, coinciding with the 67th anniversary of the end of World War Two, parallels tensions between China and Southeast Asia over rival territorial claims in the South China Sea. China's lengthening naval reach has fed worries that an aggressive Beijing could brandish its military might to get its way - and galvanized Chinese citizens' demands for tough action.

Experts have said that both Beijing and Tokyo probably want to cool things down, given their close economic ties.

"But when issues touching on nationalism are involved, there are aspects politicians cannot control. Things will not be resolved automatically and careful responses are needed," said Akio Takahara, a University of Tokyo professor, before news that the activists would be deported.

Seven of the 14 activists arrested had waded ashore and planted a Chinese flag on the rocky, uninhabited isle on Wednesday, prompting Japan and China to trade protests over the incident.

A coastguard official declined comment on the Kyodo report, while a police official said nothing had been decided.

China's ruling Communist Party is preoccupied with a looming leadership change, which will probably both increase its focus on internal stability and deter it from seeming soft on Japan, a country many Chinese still associate with wartime brutality.

"Just what kind of mentality has caused Japan to lose its self-restraint and repeatedly challenge China's staunch determination to protect its territory and sovereignty?" said China's Communist Party's mouthpiece, the People's Daily.

"IT'S JUST PLAIN LAZY"

Small protests were held sporadically amid tight security near Japan's embassy in Beijing, while China's government faced a storm of online criticism from Chinese bloggers demanding a tougher stance to ensure the activists' quick release.

"These islands are China's. We should use the military to protect our rights," said supermarket worker Song Gang, 25, who was walking near the Japanese embassy.

Around 30 people protested at the Japanese consulate in Hong Kong, chanting slogans and demanding the activists' release.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, his popularity ratings tanking after about a year in office and possibly on his way out soon, also faces domestic pressure not to appear weak.

"The prime minister should visit the islands. If he doesn't go at this point, it's just plain lazy," said the nationalist governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara.

His proposal for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to buy the islands from their private owners ratcheted up tensions and pushed Noda to try to have the central government make the purchase instead.

A Japanese nationalist group is sponsoring a weekend trip by lawmakers and others to waters near the island, although the government has denied permission to land.

"In both countries, there is a tail wagging-the-dog phenomenon, with lower-level politicians or individual activists taking nationalist stances or actions and forcing the central governments to respond to escalating tension," Stephanie Kleine-Ahlbrandt of the International Crisis Group said by email.

"While Japan's national leaders are navigating a fragmented and shifting political landscape, the Chinese leadership is steering a potentially treacherous power transfer, limiting the political capital available to either Tokyo or Beijing to go against populist or nationalist sentiment."

With economic links tighter than ever, both sides probably want to avoid a rerun of a nasty spat two years ago after Japan's arrest of a Chinese trawler captain whose boat collided with a Japanese patrol boat near the islands.

China at the time imposed a de facto ban on exports of rare earth metals vital for electronics and auto parts manufacturing.

On Thursday, China's commerce ministry urged Japan to handle the issue properly. "China hopes Japan can make concrete efforts to create a good environment for the sound development of bilateral economic and trade relationships and advance the development of the strategic and mutually beneficial relations," said ministry spokesman Shen Danyang.

Japan's relations with former colony South Korea have also nosedived over a separate islands row. Adding to the anger of Japan's neighbors, two Japanese ministers paid homage at a shrine for war dead on Wednesday.
