Russian Plane Crash Black Boxes Examined In Deadly Moscow Crash

MOSCOW -- Investigators on Sunday examined flight recorders and other evidence to try to determine the cause of the airliner crash in Moscow that killed five people, an official said.

The Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings was carrying eight people, all of them crew members, when it careered off the runway Saturday while landing at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. It went partly into an adjacent highway, broke into pieces and caught fire.

Four people were pronounced dead soon after the crash and the airline said on its Twitter account that a fifth, a flight attendant, died Sunday. Those who died Saturday were the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and another attendant, Red Wings said.

The survivors were reported in critical or serious condition in Moscow hospitals.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency, was quoted by Russian news agencies saying the data recorders were being examined, along with fuel samples. In addition, he said flight documents for the plane have been taken from the airline for examination.

How MiGym plans to quantify the health club workout ? Mobile ...

Chicago app developer MiGym is giving health clubs an app store presence, but it has bigger plans. It hopes to make the gym a critical element in the quantified self, tracking members? workout data and sharing that information with fitness and health platforms.

The new year is just a few days away, which means New Year?s resolutions are just about to kick in. A lot of people (myself included) have committed to getting in shape, but for many (again myself included) that resolution doesn?t get much further than signing up for a gym membership and a few perfunctory workouts before those grand fitness plans fall to the wayside.

A Chicago-based startup called MiGym, however, wants to weave a tighter-knit relationship between the gym and its customers, benefiting active exercisers and the less motivated alike. It?s developed a smartphone app platform used by health clubs across the country. The app doesn?t just create a smartphone presence for a gym, it seeks to engage its members more actively. It uses social networking to connect members with similar sporting interests and exercise regimes, and it allows them to view, book and manage classes.

MiGym appGeorge Monical, who heads up the MiGym division of Chicago app development shop Solstice Mobile, said he has even bigger ambitions for the app. Soon MiGym?s dozens of national and regional health club chains will be able to start tracking workout data. MiGym is tapping into APIs offered by gym equipment makers like Life Fitness and exploring ways of quantifying the health benefits of more traditional workouts from aerobics classes to free weights ? tying them all into a single unified workout tracking tool.

It?s a neat idea, but not one that?s very useful if all of that info is trapped inside your gym app ? it would become just one more disparate repository of health information. But Monical said MiGym believes strongly in the concept of the quantified self (subscription required), and it aims to incorporate its apps into the overall fitness data ecosystem, Monical said. In addition to working with Life Fitness, its tapping into the APIs of Fitbit (see disclosure) and Runkeeper as well as any source of open health data it can get its hands on.

The idea is that MiGym will accept information for its own app and share it with other apps, Monical said. So if you take a three-mile run in the park tracked by an external app or device, those steps run and calories will be included in MiGym?s meters. Conversely, any data taken from the gym, whether it?s scooped directly out of an elliptical trainer or approximated from a kickboxing class, could be funneled into any outside fitness portal, Monical said.

Eventually, MiGym wants to explore direct partnerships with the healthcare industry, transmitting information to your doctor or ? with permission ? to your insurer. If State Farm and Allstate can track use machine-to-machine technology to track your real driving behavior and consequently reward safe drivers with lower premiums, Monical asked, why can?t health insurers do the same thing, granting lower rates to people who keep in shape?

Disclosure: Fitbit is backed by True Ventures, a venture capital firm that is an investor in the parent company of this blog, Giga Omni Media. Om Malik, founder of Giga Omni Media, is also a venture partner at True.

Israel Supreme Court Overturns Ban on Arab Politician

Israel's Supreme Court on Sunday overturned a decision by the Central Elections Committee banning Arab-Israeli politician Haneen Zuabi from standing in next month's snap general election.

"Following a hearing on 27/12/2012, it was decided unanimously to reject the Central Elections Committee's decision... to prevent representative Haneen Zuabi from standing for elections for the 19th Knesset," a summary of the court's decision said.

The summary, which was released ahead of the full decision later on Sunday, did not explain why the court was overturning the committee's decision, but confirmed that Zuabi would be able to stand in the January 22 vote.

A member of the Arab-Israeli leftwing Balad party, Zuabi is a controversial figure in Israeli society.

A firebrand critic of the government, Zuabi has regularly tangled with rightwing members of the Knesset, who sought to disqualify her from running in the next election.

They argue that she fails to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, and backed enemies of the state by participating in a 2010 Gaza-bound flotilla that was raided by Israeli commandos in an operation that killed nine Turkish activists.

Speaking to public radio after the court ruling, Zuabi said she was happy with the result.

"I welcome the Supreme Court's decision. This is what I expected," she said.

"I don't regret having participated in the Mavi Marmara (flotilla). I know what I did," she added.

"There was no legal basis for the (committee's) decision, which was based only on political considerations," she said in a separate interview with Israeli military radio.

"The Supreme Court has not succumbed to pressure from the racist right wing."

Israel's elections committee, which is composed of representatives from political parties, has in the past voted to ban Balad, as well as another Arab-Israeli party and other Arab Israeli politicians, from elections.

But those decisions were overturned by the Supreme Court, which had again been expected to strike down the decision banning Zuabi's participation in the January poll.

Correction: Vatican-Christmas Shopping story

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? In a story Dec. 23 about the Vatican's tax-free department store, The Associated Press erroneously reported that online cigar retailer www.bestcigarprices.com sells Cuban Montecristo No. 3 cigars. The company sells Montecristos made in the Dominican Republic.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Ho Ho Holy Discount: Vatican tax-free store busy

Ho Ho Holy Discount: Vatican tax-free department store open late to accommodate Christmas rush

By NICOLE WINFIELD

Associated Press

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Anyone left on your Christmas list just aching for a 65-inch Samsung 3D flat-screen television? Just your luck. The Vatican's duty-free department store has one on sale for ?2,899 ($3,840) ? a nifty savings over the ?3,799 ($5,032) it costs at Italy's main electronics chain Euronics.

Or how about some new luggage for the holidays? The Vatican shop stocks a variety of Samsonite Cordoba Duo carry-ons for ?123, a nice markdown from the ?135 on the Samsonite website. But if a last-minute shopping splurge is in order, the Vatican can also oblige: Take this leather-bound travelling trunk from Florence's "The Bridge" leatherworks, with its five drawers, plaid interior, six wooden hangars and shiny brass buckles.

At ?5,900, it comes with a matching leather golf club bag, just what every monsignor needs under his Christmas tree.

There's a little-known open secret in the Vatican gardens, a few paces behind St. Peter's Basilica and tucked inside the Vatican's old train station: a sprawling, three-story tax-free department store that rivals any airport duty free or military PX, stocking everything from Church's custom grade shoes (?483 a pair) to Baume et Mercier watches (ladies ?1,585, men's Capeland ?5,000).

There's a hitch, however. It's not open to the public, only to Vatican citizens, employees and their dependents, diplomats accredited to the Holy See and (unofficially) their lucky friends who, after stocking up on holiday must-haves, proceed to the checkout with their Vatican connection and the ID card that entitles them to shop there.

To be sure, Rome is no stranger to tax-free shopping. Many embassies, nearby military bases and the U.N. food agencies have commissaries for their employees, where imports of everything from American ice cream to French wine can be had minus the 21 percent sales tax included in list prices in Italy.

The Vatican has that and more, given that it's its own sovereign state ? the world's smallest ? operating in central Rome. At 44 hectares (110 acres), the Vatican city state is the physical home of the Holy See: the pope and governing structure and administration of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican Museums, home of Sistine Chapel, are the main profit-making enterprise of the Vatican city state, bringing in ?91.3 million in revenue last year alone. But other smaller entrepreneurial endeavors boost the Vatican's coffers as well, including the department store, the tax-free gas station, the stamp and coin office, the Vatican pharmacy and its supermarket.

And in these days of austerity, their profits and bottom line are ever more important to the Vatican.

The Vatican is entitled to run such tax-free enterprises inside its walls based on the Lateran Treaty, the 1929 pact that regularized and regulates the Vatican's relations with Italy. But those regulations also limit the Vatican's customer base, lest all of Rome descend on the supermarket to stock up on Gordon's Gin (?8.50 a liter compared to the ?15 it can run in nearby liquor stores) or Montecristo No. 3 cigars (box of 25 ?84 ($110.95) compared to $164.95 on www.bestcigarprices.com).

About 4,700 people are employed by the Holy See and the Vatican city state; the Vatican's diplomatic corps ? the Holy See has relations with some 175 countries ? adds another chunk to the customer base.

Few people outside Rome know the department store exists ? there's no evidence of it on any Vatican website, no photos of its wares, no advertising outside the Vatican walls. Those who do know it exists seem to want to pretend it doesn't since the high-end luxury items on sale aren't necessarily in tune with either the sobriety or the salaries of the Vatican rank-and-file.

In fact, on a recent Thursday morning, nary a collar nor religious habit was in sight as ordinary lay folk milled around the spacious store during December's "extraordinary opening hours" ? extended to accommodate bargain-hunting Christmas shoppers who were rewarded with a wine tasting in the central atrium and piles of Brooks Brothers non-iron shirts and Burberry backpacks to choose from.

"More than the prices, it's the material," said Luciano, a bulky Roman, who refused to give his last name as he shopped for an overcoat with his wife and an obliging Vatican friend waiting at checkout. "This one I don't like ? I look like a priest," he muttered as he put the navy blue trench coat back on a hangar.

Cardinal Edmund Szoka, the American who sought to bring some order into the Vatican's finances as head of the Vatican city state, is credited with having made the department store what it is today, moving it into the Vatican's underused train station, a miniature version of Washington's Union station with a sweeping double staircase and glass-front window that frames the dome of St. Peter's a few meters (yards) away.

Szoka said he moved it from the basement of the Vatican government building to the train station for more space, since the station wasn't used anymore for passengers and provided the perfect, airy open space that a shop of its kind would require.

"Our principal motivation in changing the train station building into a department store was mainly for the convenience of our employees, as well as for those who could come into the Vatican and shop there," he said in an email from his home in Michigan. "Naturally, we expected a profit, but that was not the primary motivation."

Szoka retired in 2006, well before the global economic crisis hit. The current leadership of the "Governorato" as the city state administration is called, recently asked all department heads to come up with cost-saving or profit-making initiatives to help the Vatican get through the tough times.

"Any good administrator wants to save what can be saved," said Monsignor Giuseppe Sciacca, the governorato's No. 2. "It seems obvious, necessary."

The Philatelic and Numismatic Office, for example, recently started selling a special limited-edition stamp to help pay for the ?14 million restoration of the Bernini colonnade in St. Peter's Square after corporate sponsorship dried up amid the recession.

Vatican Radio announced in July it would be saving "hundreds of thousands of euros" in energy costs by stopping short -and -medium-wave broadcasts to Europe and the Americas, using other technologies instead.

Perhaps even more than the department store, the Vatican supermarket is a much-sought after perk for Vatican employees, and a boost to the Vatican's bottom line. And at Christmastime, it is as jammed as the department store, with lines snaking through the store and cars taking up valuable parking spaces inside Vatican City as shoppers pile their carts high with panettone, the traditional Italian Christmas cake which is the de rigueur gift for Italian holiday parties. Panettone can run ?25 a pop at Roman bakeries; in the Vatican supermarket, a high-end brand runs almost half that.

"The Nutella is just better here," said Maria Grazia Mancini, a Rome municipal worker who was doing a major pre-Christmas shop with her father, a Vatican employee. "The products here are for export ? the same brands but for export, so it's better quality."

While Sciacca is only too pleased to see the Vatican saving money where it can be saved and making it where it can be made, he was adamant that there are no plans to expand the customer base of the Vatican's little-known discount stores. Accords with Italy don't allow it.

"We shouldn't. And we can't," he said.

He spoke on the sidelines of the presentation of the Vatican's 2012 nativity scene, being unveiled Monday night and donated for the first time. The Vatican happily accepted the donated creche from the Italian region of Basilicata after its ?550,000 Christmas setup in 2009 was exposed earlier this year during the scandal over leaked Vatican documents.

Hair Structure

Hair Structure

Human hair consists of proteins, lipids, water, trace elements and pigments. Depending on its moisture content (up to 32% by weight), human hair, consists of approximately 65% to 95% proteins. Proteins are condensation polymers of amino acids. Hair is composed of 97 percent keratin, the same protein that makes up nails and the outer layer of our skin. The main elements that make up human hair are carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. For hair loss, the most significant component is the dermal papilla. The dermal papilla contains blood and nerve supply that provides nutrients needed for hair growth.

Identify Reasons of Hair Thinning

Hair Thinning

Hair Thinning

Androgenic Alopecia is frequent cause of hair loss. This results in smallness of hair, changing it into soft silky hair, similar to the hair on your hands. Hair Thinning and Hair Loss may be the outcome of combination or one of the following:-

  • Genetics
  • Age
  • Hormonal changes
  • An unhealthy diet may also contribute to hair loss.
  • Blood circulation plays an important role in hair thinning. If the dermal papilla is not receiving enough blood supply, the hair follicle dies and can never grow back.
  • Hair thinning is caused by lack of circulation in the scalp. If treated early on, hair loss may be prolonged and even prevented.
  • Chemical relaxers and other styling methods can cause hair thinning and breakage.
  • Lack of protein,
  • Stress
  • Illness
  • Pregnancy

British team abandons drilling in Antarctic lake

Technical problem, fuel shortage force suspension of scientific project to find life in Earth's remotest environment. US, Russia set to begin their Antarctic drilling projects.

By Dasha Afanasieva,?Reuters / December 28, 2012

A seal swims by icebergs off the British Antarctic Survey's Rothera base in this 2009 file photo. A BAS team has called off an ambitious project to drill to sub-glacial lake to look for forms of life and survey the effects of what happened the last time the Antarctic ice sheet broke up.

An ambitious British plan to search for minute forms of life in an ancient lake beneath Antarctica's ice has been suspended because of technical problems, the scientist leading the project said on Thursday.

In a move that clears the way for U.S. and Russian teams to take the lead, Professor Martin Siegert said technical problems and a lack of fuel had forced the closure on Christmas Day of the 7-million-pound ($11 million) project, which was looking for life forms and climate change clues in the lake-bed sediment.

"This is of course, hugely frustrating for us, but we have learned a lot this year," said Siegert of the University of Bristol, principal investigator for the mission, which was headed by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

"By the end, the equipment was working well, and much of it has now been fully field-tested," he said on the BAS website.

Experts from Britain's Lake Ellsworth mission had expected to find minute forms of life in the lake three km (two miles) under Antarctica's ice, the most remote and extreme environment known on Earth.

They had also hoped that by dating bits of seashell found in the water they would have been able to ascertain when the ice sheet last broke up and to better understand the risks of it happening again.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Scientists from the United States and Russia are hot on Britain's heels when it comes to drilling through Antarctic ice to lakes that have been hidden for thousands of years.

The U.S. team is aiming to start drilling in Lake Whillans, one of 360 known sub-glacial lakes in Antarctica, in January or February 2013.

Russia was the first to pierce 3,769 metres (12,365 ft) of solid ice to reach Lake Vostok early in 2012. But some scientists believe their samples may have been contaminated by drilling fluids.

The British scientists decided to abandon the mission after trying for 20 hours to connect two holes in the ice that were needed for the hot-water drill to work, said a BAS spokeswoman.

Without a connection between the two holes, the hot water would seep into the porous surface layers of ice and be lost, reducing the pressure and rendering the drill ineffective.

The team tried to melt and dig more snow to compensate for the water loss, but without success.

As a result of the extra time taken to fix the problem, fuel stocks had been depleted to such a level as to make the operation unviable.

Asked how long the delay might be before the project could be resumed, Siegert told the BBC: "It will take a season or two to get all our equipment out of Antarctica and back to the UK, so at a minimum we're looking at three to four, maybe five years I would have thought."

However, he said he felt this year's mission had not been a complete loss.

The BAS spokeswoman said: "It's very possible that either the U.S. or Russia may take the lead but I think the one thing we've learned here is that anything can go wrong."

"We've never depicted this as a race. All sub-glacial lakes would give different information," she said.

Fla. woman 'mortified' by insult on valet ticket

By Christina Hernandez, NBCMiami.com

After a South Florida woman picked up her car from valet, something was left inside it ? an insult written on the ticket.

"I was mortified," Sharyn Peoples said. "In handwriting it said 'play, red dress, and fat' on it."

Peoples was at Mizner Park in Boca Raton to act in a play earlier this month. She was wearing a red dress. But she said writing the word "fat" on her valet ticket crosses the line.

Peoples was so upset, she reached out to LAZ Parking of Florida.

"It's only words and it's from some kid, and that's one of the things the guy said to me on the phone. He said, 'You know, we employ 18- and 20-year-old kids.' I said, 'Sir, they're legally adults.'"

Read more news on NBCMiami.com

After their conversation on the phone, Peoples received an e-mail from Dan Silva of LAZ Parking of South Florida that started out with "Please accept our sincerest apologies." Part of it also said that moving forward "physical appearance will not be written on tickets" and that "this type of situation will never occur again."

In the e-mail written to Peoples, Silva also offered her free valet parking for next year and a gift card to a restaurant at Mizner Park.

"We deeply regret this incident and the company has apologized to the customer and the employee has been disciplined," said Luis Macedo, the general manager of LAZ Parking of Florida, in a statement on Friday. "LAZ Parking continues to be committed to providing the best customer experience possible."

Peoples said she is devastated by what happened, and doubts she is the first customer to fall victim to this kind of treatment. Now, she hopes whoever did it is fired and the insults are curbed.

"People should not accept employees slandering their patrons in any way, shape, or form," she said.

Peoples doesn't know which employee wrote the insult on her valet ticket, but she has a message for the writer.

"I feel bad for you that your parents obviously didn't raise you well enough, and I hope you understand this is not at all acceptable," she said.

{Above: Chorizo, Lentil & Roasted Tomato Soup from What Katie Ate}

Traveling for the holidays gave me a healthy dose of the wintery weather that we?re lacking in the Bay Area. I took advantage of a particularly snowy afternoon to walk my Christmas cards to the post office as the drifts began to build. On the walk back, as I tried to keep warm, I started dreaming of making some delicious, steamy soup. While I?m thankful to have made it back to California before this latest storm started piling snow up across the midwest and east coast and causing travel headaches, a little part of me would like to be hunkering down right now, and putting a pot of one of these soups on the stove.

If you?re lucky enough (or unlucky enough, as the case may be) to be digging out from the latest blizzard, consider these recipes to keep warm. The Chorizo, Lentil & Roasted Tomato Soup pictured above from What Katie Ate is at the top of my recipes-to-try list. And the Kale & White Bean Soup from Guest Recipes contributor Love & Lemons looks like a perfect lunch. I?m also bookmarking Aran?s?Lobster and Fennel Stew for a future dinner party or special occasion.

Grumpy Cat! NASA Mohawk Guy! Gangnam Style! McKayla still not impressed?

KnowYourMeme

By Helen A.S. Popkin

Here?s a look at 10 memes that made our Internet year worth living.

?Grumpy Cat
Grumpy Cat was not the only fresh-faced Internet cat of 2012, but she emerges as the most memorable ? largely because she rose to Reddit fame in the fourth quarter. A former shelter cat with a 24/7 scowl, Grumpy Cat (whose real name is Tartar Sauce), appears in countless LOL-style pictures, showing her disdain for everything from the holidays ("Ho. Ho. No.") and the anticlimactic Mayan apocalypse ("Still here. Worst apocalypse ever.") to people ("There are two kinds of people in the world. And I don't like them.")

Other notable Internet cats of 2012: Colonel Meow, Henri, Le Chat Noir?and Lil Bub.

KnowYourMeme.com

NASA Mohawk Guy
As NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory team celebrated landing the Curiosity Rover on Mars, the Internet was far more intrigued by Bobak Ferdowsi, the young, handsome JPL team member with the star-spangled Mohawk hairdo.

Picking up more than 20,000 Twitter followers overnight, Ferdowski also earned the ultimate tribute, a Tumblr site featuring an ongoing supply of user-submitted LOL pictures, many with captions complimenting his cool, such as this one: "Becomes an Internet sensation ... Too busy landing a robot on Mars to notice."

Binders Full of Women Tumblr

Binders Full of Women
While the President Barack Obama-bashing "You Didn't Build That" had decent run, it was Republican candidate Mitt Romney who inspired most of the memes of the 2012 presidential election. There was "Fired Big Bird," a viral response to Romney's comment about possible budget cuts to public broadcasting. Clint Eastwood, who addressed an empty chair (meant to represent Obama) at the Republican National Convention gave us "Eastwooding" (photos of fingers pointing at chairs).

But it was "Binders Full of Women,"?inspired by Romney's comment about pay equity, that brought the meme madness. From the Trapper Keeper notebook emblazoned with the words "Trap Her Keep Her" that graced the?original?"Binders Full of Women" Tumblr?to a "Say Anything"-era John Cusack holding binders (instead of a boom box) over his head, there seemed no end to the ways the Internet could illustrated this quote ... until everyone got bored and moved on.

Texts From Hillary

Texts from Hillary
A couple news photos showing sunglasses-wearing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton aboard a military C-17 aircraft and checking out her cellphone inspired two guys to launch the "Texts from Hillary" Tumblr.?

Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe manipulated the images to the max, juxtaposing photos to reveal Clinton cellphone-trolling everyone from Sarah Palin and President Barack Obama, to "Pretty Little Liars,"?a free-car offering?Oprah Winfrey and the ever-texting Jeff Winger of "Community." Our favorite remains a cross pollination of the still-hilarious Ryan Gosling "Hey Girl" Tumblr meme.

Ridiculously Photogenic Guy
Just a guy who happened to smile at a camera while running a marathon in South Carolina, Zeddie Little achieved Internet fame the way so many humans and cats do these days???via Reddit. The accidental photo bomb of Mr. Ridiculously Photogenic Guy?(as the photo was described when first posted to Reddit) became the subject of a very complimentary photo meme similar to that enjoyed by Nasa Mohawk Guy. His original picture was adorned with phrases such as "Looks into broken mirror ? fixes it" and "Photo bombs a picture ? everyone else is cropped out."

As Know Your Meme notes, "Mr. Ridiculously Photogenic Guy" inspired a number of derivatives, including "Ridiculously Photogenic Puppy," Ridiculously Photogenic Surgery Girl," and "Ridiculously Photogenic Syrian Rebel."

KnowYourMeme.com

Overly Attached Girlfriend
Unlike Mr. Ridiculously Photogenic Guy, Overly Attached Girlfriend (Laina Walker) achieved her Internet infamy kinda sorta on purpose, via her YouTube song "Boyfriend," a spoof on the Justin Bieber song "Girlfriend."

"If I was your girlfriend / I?d never let you leave / without a small recording device / taped under your sleeve," is just one line of Walker's singing satire. Of course, it helped that the screen grab that went on to become a photo meme captured Walker wide-eyed and looking a little crazy. "I sewed my name on your shirt ? in case you forgot you're taken" and "Oh, you found someone else? I'm pregnant" were two favorites.?

The fake photos of Superstorm Sandy
In late October, as Superstorm Sandy lurched towards New York City, 10 pictures per second were being posted to Instagram with the hashtag #sandy ? mostly of people prepping for the storm or what it looked like outside. Then there were the fake Sandy photos popping up all over social media. Some tried to pass off screen grabs from "The Day After Tomorrow." Others used Photoshop to show Godzilla emerging towards the waves or a kitty-faced storm cloud looming over the Statue of Liberty, funny stuff which help?alleviate?storm-inspired stress.?

As we noted then, many of us at home had little else to do but update our social media statuses?while we still had electricity, and were grateful to those who made with the funny.?

McKayla is Not Impressed?
A momentary facial movement, frozen in time, made United States gymnast McKayla Maroney?the biggest photo bomb meme of 2012. There she was, receiving the Silver Medal at the London Olympic Games for what many said was a nearly flawless vault, arms crossed and looking ? well ? really not impressed.

Thanks to the magic of the Internet, Maroney was soon looking unimpressed with plenty of things ("Hydrox? I thought you said Oreos") and turning up in famous memes of years past ? Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Music Awards, the "Situation Room" scene when Obama, Clinton and the rest of the gang received news of the Osama bin Laden raid, and even "NASA Mohawk Guy."?For her part, Maroney took it all in stride, and recently even struck her famous pose with the President.

ERMAHGERD!
When the photo of an adolescent girl with pigtails, a retainer and books from R.L. Stein's "Goosebumps" series first hit Reddit, it wasn't immediately clear how the meme would go. The phonetic mimic of what it sounds like when you're an excited kid with a mouth full of orthodonture inspired "ERMAHGERD!" ("Oh my God!), GERSBERMS ("Goosebumps") and "BERKS! (Books!) as the meme ramped up. But in the end, the Internet favored "ERMAHGERD!" And really, can you blame us? What better word describes overwhelming excitement and joy over something you find to painfully awesome! It's especially hilarious when "said" by an animal ? at least in the ongoing photo meme.

YouTube

Gangnam Style
The first video on the Internet to be viewed more than a billion times, this K-Pop hit by Korean rapper PSY is?inarguably?the top meme of 2012. The song, the video and the crazy cowboy dance moved past the meme-makers of the Internet to achieve mainstream obsession. Even before the "Saturday Night Life" sketch (featuring a cameo by PSY), YouTube was lousy with "Gangnam Style" parodies, from the political "Mitt Romney Style" to a?baby version, a?Gangam-meets-Minecraft sendup?and even a?Brony interpretation, as well as the must-see?"Teens React"?video from viral pros the Fine Bros. And?so on.

"Gangnam Style" mania also inspired a bait-and-switch?Jar Jar Binks "Gungan Style" video from Funny or Die's Nick Wiger that borders on brilliant. If you watch it through, you're rewarded with a cold-splash-of-water interpretation of how we're spending our life on the Internet. No spoiler alert here. You've got "Gangnam Style" stuck in your head now anyway, so you might as well have a look. ??

Oregon Humane Society gearing up for 11000th - OregonLive.com

The Oregon Humane Society is on a countdown for its 11,000th adoption this year.

The Northeast Portland nonprofit expects to hit that mark between 2 and 4 p.m. on Thursday for the third straight year. Last year, the society recorded 11,521 adoptions, a record since the current shelter on Northeast Columbia Boulevard opened in 2000.

"We adopt more pets from our shelter on Columbia Boulevard than any other single facility on the West Coast," said Sharon Harmon, the society's executive director. "We're one of the busiest humane societies in the nation, thanks in large part to the compassion of this community."

The society has slashed adoption fees by 50 percent or more to empty its kennels and clear out other animal areas. Fees, which include spaying or neutering, initial shots and microchips, range from $50 for a dog aged 1 year or older to $12 for an adult cat. Puppies, which are not discounted, still cost $200 to $400.

About 85 animals are up for adoption, including cats, dogs, rabbits, birds and a hamster. The resident who's been at the society the longest is Mittens, a short-haired black-and-white cat, 7 years old. She's been at the shelter since Oct. 5. Kelso, a 5-year-old Springer spaniel mix, arrived Nov. 6, making him the longest current canine resident.?

Society staff hope they find homes soon.

The shelter, located at 1067 N.E. Columbia Blvd., is open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday.

Washington stirs for "fiscal cliff" talks as Obama heads home

WASHINGTON/HONOLULU (Reuters) - Efforts to prevent the U.S. economy from going over a "fiscal cliff" stirred back to life on Wednesday with less than a week to go before potentially disastrous tax hikes and spending cuts kick in at the New Year.

In a sign that there may be a way through deadlock in Congress, Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner urged the Democrat-controlled Senate to act to pull back from the cliff and offered to at least consider any bill the upper chamber produced.

President Barack Obama will try to revive budget crisis talks - which stalled last week - when he returns to Washington on Thursday after cutting short his Christmas holiday in Hawaii.

But the White House and Republicans are still far apart, as hopes for legislation to prevent the economy from tumbling off the fiscal cliff switch to the Senate.

Democrats control a majority in that chamber but still need some support from Republicans across the aisle for a likely attempt to raise taxes on the wealthy.

A senior administration official told reporters traveling with Obama in Hawaii that senior Republican leaders in Congress, Senator Mitch McConnell and Boehner, should step up to head off the looming tax and spending hit.

"It's up to the Senate Minority Leader not to block a vote, and it's up the House Republican leader, the Speaker of the House ... to allow a vote," the official said.

Months of congressional gridlock on how reduce the deficit and rein in the nation's $16 trillion federal debt have begun to affect ordinary Americans.

Shoppers might have spent less this holiday season for fear of looming income tax increases and reports of lackluster retail holiday sales added to the urgency for a deal. U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday, dragged lower by shares of retail companies.

TREASURY BUYING TIME

To avoid defaulting on the national debt if the budget crisis spins out of control, the Treasury Department announced measures essentially designed to buy time to allow Congress to resolve its differences and raise the debt borrowing limit.

Obama flies back from Hawaii overnight and is due in the White House on Thursday morning.

Starbucks Chief Executive Howard Schultz is urging workers in the company's roughly 120 Washington-area coffee shops to write "come together" on customers' cups on Thursday and Friday to tell politicians to end the crisis.

"We're paying attention, we're greatly disappointed in what's going on and we deserve better," Schultz told Reuters.

Boehner and his House Republican leadership team said in a statement that "the Senate must act first."

That puts the ball in the court of the Democrats in the Senate, which is likely to base any legislation on a bill it passed earlier this year to continue tax breaks for households with incomes below $250,000.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid issued a strongly worded statement calling on Republicans to "drop their knee-jerk obstruction."

"The Senate bill could pass tomorrow if House Republicans would simply let it come to the floor," the spokesman said.

A Senate bill would likely contain an extension of expiring unemployment benefits for those who have been out of work for extended periods.

With the 435 members scattered throughout the country because the House is in recess, House Republican leaders scheduled a conference call for Thursday with members to possibly discuss bringing the chamber back into session to deal with the fiscal cliff.

The budget fight is not just about taxes, however.

The country faces $109 billion in across-the-board spending cuts starting in January unless a deal is reached to either replace or delay them. Democrats want to switch the spending cuts to tax increases for the most part.

House Republicans have passed a bill to stop the military portion of the spending cuts and place the entire burden on domestic activities, including some social safety net programs.

But the main focus is on how to stop tax hikes on January 1.

"This is the (emergency) scenario that we have long believed would rise in probability the closer we go to December 31, which essentially calls for extending all the rates for those individuals making under $200K and households under $250K and does not address the debt ceiling or the deficit," analyst Chris Krueger of Guggenheim Securities wrote in a research note.

Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, who is retiring at year's end, told MSNBC that $250,000 "is too low of a threshold" for raising income taxes.

RAISING TAX THRESHOLD

She said that in conversations she has had with some Senate Democrats, "they are saying maybe more in the $400,000 to $500,000 category."

Obama himself recently offered to raise the threshold to $400,000, before negotiations with Boehner broke off.

Boehner and other Republican leaders said in a statement that if the Senate sends the House new fiscal cliff legislation, "The House will then consider whether to accept the bills ... or to send them back to the Senate with additional amendments.

"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass, but the Senate first must act."

But even if a handful of Senate Republicans support Democrats on a measure to avoid the worst of the fiscal cliff, time is short. When the Senate returns on Thursday it is due to work on a disaster aid bill to help New York and New Jersey recover from Superstorm Sandy and other measures.

All 191 House Democrats might have to team up with at least 26 Republicans to get a majority if the bill included tax hikes on the wealthiest Americans, as Obama is demanding.

Some of those votes could conceivably come from among the 34 Republican members who are either retiring or were defeated in the November elections and no longer have to worry about the political fallout.

An alternative is for Congress to let income taxes go up on everyone as scheduled. Then, during the first week of January, lawmakers would strike a quick deal to reduce them except on people in the highest brackets.

They could also pass a measure putting off the $109 billion in automatic spending cuts that most lawmakers want to avoid.

Once the clock ticks past midnight on December 31, no member of Congress would have to vote for a tax increase on anyone - taxes would have risen automatically - and the only votes would be to decrease tax rates for most Americans back to their 2012 levels.

Robert Lustig, M.D.: Bring Back Home Ec -- and This Time, for Boys, Too!

In Contra Costa County, Calif., a high school student juices six oranges to make eight ounces of juice, downs it in 12 seconds flat, and says, "I'm hungry, what's for breakfast?" A second student cuts up six oranges, taking 15 minutes to eat five of them, and says, "I think I'm going to be sick, I couldn't eat another bite." These students are participating in a pilot program to bring the lessons of food to an otherwise unsuspecting population, our nation's impoverished youth. A substantial percentage of these kids are obese, and some already have Type 2 diabetes. Most of these kids have never seen the inside of an orange. Previously, they had no connection between the food they were eating and what was going on in their bodies (obesity, metabolic syndrome) and their brains (sluggishness, poor academic performance). These high school students are making a complete and healthy breakfast daily, not just for themselves but for the teachers as well. In just weeks the students' palates have changed and this awareness has spread throughout the school. One student complained, "You have ruined McDonald's for me!" These kids are growing their own food on campus. Students are planting, picking, cooking, and composting. The garden is "ag-certified," meaning the extra produce can be used in the school cafeteria.

In San Francisco, Calif., Kids Cook! is an eight-week pilot program created by the Bay Area American Heart Association's 2020 Task Force. Most students had never cooked before, but they soon had their hands inside the guts of a salmon. After eight one-hour sessions they were let loose as their Iron Chef-style final yielded award-winning fish tacos. Along with a partnership from Whole Foods Market and AHA, they will compete in a Food Truck Competition at the famed Off the Grid Food Truck spot at SF's Fort Mason for Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Day 2013.

Alice Waters pioneered the Edible Schoolyard in 1995 in a vacant Berkeley lot. Kids who had never seen a fresh vegetable, let alone watch one come out of the ground, are treated to the amazing sight and palatability of "growing your own." Waters' program has expanded via the Chez Panisse Foundation, and is being replicated in various schools throughout the country. Here's the problem: growing a vegetable is one thing, but cooking it is another. California is the artichoke capital of the world, one of the true vegetarian delicacies, yet virtually nobody knows how to cook it; certainly no one in our younger generation.

We are in the midst of the most significant public health crisis of all time -- our national epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, which threaten to bankrupt Medicare by 2024. Roughly 75 percent of health care costs are due to chronic disease, and roughly 75 percent of these costs are potentially recoupable. Although we can argue the myriad proximate causes of our health decline, the one reason we can all agree on is the plethora of processed food that started after World War II, but really ramped up starting in the 1970s. Processed food took off due to expense, time savings for two-parent working or single-parent families, and the women's rights movement. Back then, only 4 percent of all food consumed was outside the home; currently, it is 34 percent. Americans eat 31 percent more packaged food than fresh food, usually consisting of a throw-in-the oven pizza or microwave TV dinner.

These alterations in our food supply and methods of food preparation (or lack thereof) have evinced several detrimental effects. First, Americans are getting sick. Processed food means the addition of sugar; of the 600,000 items in the food supply, 80 percent are laced with added sugar (added by the food industry for its own purposes). Sugar drives the development of all these chronic metabolic diseases. Second, processed food means fiberless food because you can't freeze fiber (try freezing an orange, see what you get). Fiber is the stealth nutrient. Lack of fiber is associated with these same diseases. Our ancestors used to consume 100 grams of fiber per day, the USDA suggests we consume 25 grams, and our median fiber consumption is 15 grams. And third, we've lost an entire generation of cooks. Many parents today don't even know how to boil water, let alone prepare a meal from scratch. And this is the "gift that keeps on giving." Kitchen-illiterate parents mean kitchen-illiterate kids, and so on. The human and economic carnage of chronic disease escalates. And so on.

Hippocrates said it first and best: "Let thy food be thy medicine." Numerous studies demonstrate when you switch to a low-sugar, high-fiber diet -- and it doesn't matter which diet you prefer (see the high-fat Atkins Diet or the low-fat Ornish Diet or the Paleolithic Diet) -- they all work to treat, and in some instances even reverse these chronic diseases. All three have been shown to reduce reliance on anti-diabetic medications. You know what you call a low-sugar, high-fiber diet? Real food. You can't buy these diets in a box. You have to prepare them.

Teaching home economics in school is virtually extinct. This is where food science, preparation, and safety used to be imparted to girls of the previous generation. But boys need this information equally, since the "new family" means that 70 percent of men find themselves in charge of getting food on the table at least once a week. With parents working and kitchen-illiterate, both girls and boys need to know how to cook in order to keep themselves and their children metabolically healthy over a lifetime. Cooking is a life skill everyone needs. It is not elitist to want, shop, and cook real food. It is essential to life. What better way to prepare for college or life than to learn food science, navigating the grocery store, preparing real food meals with limited time and/or budget as well impress your girlfriend/boyfriend.

But there's more for our kids to learn than trussing a turkey. Hurricane Sandy just taught us another painful lesson, evidenced by the throngs of lower Manhattanites wandering the streets in the dark. We have virtually no post-apocalyptic subsistence strategies. What to do when the power goes out. How to act in an emergency. How to start and put out a fire. How to wash clothes. Clearly, our lack of basic preparedness resonates; NBC just introduced Revolution, about life with no electrical power. Some of these proficiencies are taught in Boy Scouts, but girls need to equally know these as well. Let's just not call it "home ec." It needs some rebranding -- let's give it a sexier title: Adult Survival Skills (ASS). "Hey, I'm kickin' ASS." That will get them interested.

Robert H. Lustig, M.D., is Professor of Pediatrics at University of California, San Francisco, and the author of the new book Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity and Disease (Hudson Street Press, New York), released today. He invites anyone interested in societal change around obesity to follow him on Facebook starting in the New Year.

Cindy Gershen is chef/owner of Sunrise Bistro in Walnut Creek, CA, and founder of Wellness City Challenge, a community health activist organization.

Christmas snow storm kills 3, tornadoes leave thousands in the South without power

A snow storm caused flights across the country to be cancelled. Three died, and many were injured in dangerous highway conditions and as trees fell on homes. In the South, tornadoes left 100,000 without power on Christmas Day.?

Post-Christmas travelers braced for flight delays and a raft of weather warnings for drivers, a day after rare winter twisters damaged buildings in Louisiana and Alabama.

Snow and ice covered roads in southern Illinois and southern Indiana early Wednesday. Officials urged residents to stay home if they can. State police reported numerous slide-off accidents in the Evansville, Ind., area and white-out conditions on Interstate 64 in Indiana with wind gusts around 30 mph.

The storm system headed from the Gulf Coast to New England has been blamed for three deaths and several injuries, though no one was killed outright in the tornadoes. The storms also left more than 100,000 without power for a time across the South, darkening Christmas celebrations.

Severe thunderstorms were forecast for the Carolinas while a line of blizzard and winter storm warnings stretched from Arkansas up the Ohio River to New York and on to Maine.

Thirty-four tornadoes were reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama during the outbreak Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Rick Cauley's family was hosting relatives for Christmas when tornado sirens went off in Mobile. Not taking any chances, he and his wife, Ashley, hustled everyone down the block to take shelter at the athletic field house at Mobile's Murphy High School in Mobile.

It turns out, that wasn't the place to head.

"As luck would have it, that's where the tornado hit," Cauley said. "The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second." They were all fine, though the school was damaged, as were a church and several homes, but officials say no one was seriously injured.

Camera footage captured the approach of the large funnel cloud.

Mobile was the biggest city hit by numerous twisters. Along with brutal, straight-line winds, the storms knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Torrential rains drenched the region and several places saw flash flooding.

More than 325 flights around the U.S. were canceled as of Wednesday morning, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. The cancelations were mostly spread around airports that had been or soon would be in the path of the storm.

Holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions from the same fast-moving storms. In Arkansas, highway department officials said the state was fortunate the snowstorm hit on Christmas Day when many travelers were already at their destinations.

Texas, meanwhile, dealt with high winds and slickened highways.

On Tuesday, winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver, and a 53-year-old north Louisiana man was killed when a tree fell on his house. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, and the Highway Patrol there says a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy U.S. Highway near Fairview.

Home Improvement Secrets You May Not Know About | Career Guru ...

When you are faced with lots of trees that can clutter your gutters, install a screen over the gutters to slow build-up. A gutter guard keeps leaves, sticks and other debris from filling your gutters needlessly. You will only need to check the top of the guard from time to time to make sure that the guard is not covered with any leaves.

With regards to home improvement, understand how long certain things last. For example, a new stone or brick chimney can provide 100 years or more of use. On the other hand, you may get less than 20 years' use out of a new wooden deck. A vinyl floor can last between 20 and 30 years, which seems like a long time until you consider the fact that oak flooring can easily last a century. This should be greatly considered when deciding which home renovations are worth the time and money spent on them.

Establish a budget and stick to it. Budgets are created to adhere to. Make a budget that makes sense and stick with it the whole way through.

Budgeting for your home improvements should be done in the beginning of the year. This is because after the holidays you will have a better assessment of your spending. Having little to work with may help you create a very frugal budget, indeed!

You can save on your energy bills by undertaking some simple and fast home improvement projects. Just by installing more energy efficient light bulbs, you can use a lot less energy - almost 75 percent less. Heat, energy and money can be conserved by insulating your water heater.

Give your porch an "up" as well. This is where you make your initial impression to your guests. Keep your porch clean and add tasteful enhancements. Flowers, nice furniture and great lighting can be used to dress up an otherwise boring and bland porch. This is a great way to increase the value of your home.

Ask family and friends for help with your home improvement project. If you wait to ask for help when you have already begun the project, it might be to late for people to commit. It may also take you longer to finish your project than you initially expected.

If your renovations will require using your street then you should take the time to let the neighbors know what will be going on. One Direction stars in Bad Lip Reading film spoof

By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

The pros at Bad Lip Reading have set their sights on the boys of One Direction and made them the stars of a spoof foreign language film called "Shadow Pico."

Set to the visuals of the British band's video for "Gotta Be You," "Pico" dubs phony languages over the top for a dramatic art-house feel.

"They've captivated the world with their music," the intro says. "Now experience One Direction as you've never seen them before. In their first foreign language motion picture." And then, instead of bubbly lyrics about girls and bro-bonding, the gibberish begins.

Turning on the video's closed captioning makes the entire effort all the better, especially when "Ooh, ooh, ooh" is translated as "Ooh, ooh, ooh."

With 82 million views, the real music video is in no danger (yet) of being eclipsed by the spoof's 29,000 views. But Bad Lip Reading does attract a lot of eyes -- this?classic "Twilight" spoof?has 16 million views.

VCs Love Chromatik, An iPad Music App - Business Insider

Matt Sandler, CEO and cofounder of Chromatik

Matt Sandler's used to getting chased after.

But for once, it's his tech knowhow, not his musical skills, that have made him a hot commodity.

Investors, we hear, are salivating over his iPad app, Chromatik, which has seen "rabid adoption" among Sandler's fellow musicians, a source tells us.

From what we understand, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Union Square Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz are all chasing the company down for a big investment in early 2013. The Los Angeles-based startup has already raised $2 million from Learn Capital, 500 Startups, Kapor Capital, Launchpad LA, MuckerLab, and a number of star musicians including Bruno Mars. It has a team of 13 people.

We spoke with Sandler and learned what the fuss is all about.

Sandler was an exceptionally talented teenager?so talented, the then-high school student was recruited by UCLA. He?wasn't a star athlete, nor did he heave perfect SAT scores. Instead, his coveted skill was playing the saxophone.

The professional musician has since played at most major venues in Los Angeles. He's worked with Capital Records, Virgin Records, world-renowned musicians, and celebrities.

All of that experience helped Sandler find a gaping hole in the industry?one that his startup is now exploiting with its iPad app.

As most musicians know, learning music and playing instruments are incredibly social experiences. Bands and choruses get together to rehearse. Teachers help classes of students practice. But music-collaboration tools are few and far between.

Sandler, who was a private music teacher in addition to playing in a number of bands, realized the way music is taught and practiced has never really changed. Someone learning music today learns it essentially the same way Bach and Beethoven did, with teachers scribbling notes on sheet music, then sending students home to practice alone.

Those who are fortunate enough to play in groups are lucky to meet once a week. And if they make changes to their sections while practicing on their own, there's no good way to get everyone else up to speed.

"Really, at its core, music is social and collaborative," says Sandler. "But the tools we use aren't."

Today's recording devices are "dumb," he says. They don't talk to each other. So he set out to fix that, and he created a company called Chromatik with his cofounder and CTO, James Wicker.

This summer, the Chromatik iPad app launched. Think of it as a digital music stand. It made its first public appearance on "American Idol," where famed musician Ray Chew used it instead of piano sheet music during? one of the episodes.

The app doesn't have millions of users?and it's not clear it needs to, given the professional market it serves. But its engagement metrics?the kind of numbers investors increasingly prefer to hear about?are outrageous.

Sandler says the average user opens the app four times per week, for 20 minutes each session. Musicians typically spend hours upon hours every week staring at sheet music. So now they're staring at Chromatik instead.

"They're pretty scary numbers in a way," Sandler says of Chromatik's metrics. "We power performance and practice; we're the facilitator. If something goes wrong during the middle of the performance of your life, that's not okay. We can't fail you."

In addition to hosting digital sheet music, Chromatik is also a tool for recording music. It uses the iPad's built-in microphone to make sharing and storing sound bites easy. The app also supports in-line annotations. Teachers can make notes on Chromatik's digital sheet music, then send the revised copy to students through the app. Everything is stored online, so the user's music, recordings and notes can be accessed from any iPad or Web browser.

Music can't be composed on Chromatik yet, but it's a logical next step for the company.

Future monetization opportunities are obvious. It's easy to imagine Chromatik becoming a mobile database for buying and hosting sheet music. Right now, music can be scanned to a computer and uploaded to Chromatik, like CD tracks when iTunes first launched. It can also be purchased and downloaded from stores online. Buying music directly from the app would make a lot of sense.

In addition, the platform is great for music teachers and students. Chromatik could become a platform for private music lessons. Chromatik could also offer paid subscriptions, unlocking more tools for paying members. (The combination of free and paid, or "premium," services, is sometimes called a "freemium" model.)

While Sandler wouldn't say much about plans for raising money, he did say that the heavy investor interest we've been hearing about is "accurate."

"We're very fortunate in that we have a lot of folks who are excited about what we're doing," says Sandler. "We want to impact lives across the globe. In order to power that, we're going to need much more than $2 million. We were never under the impression that the [$2 million] would be the last round we'd raise."

But how big of an opportunity is Chromatik really chasing? On the one hand, it's not a broad consumer opportunity like Twitter and Facebook; only reasonably driven students, hobbyists, and professional musicians would even be interested.

According to Sandler, those groups alone constitute a $20 billion opportunity in the United States and an $80 billion market globally. Sandler says one in five people in the United States are actively playing instruments. Most of them do so for religious reasons, singing in temples or churches weekly.

Chromatik's mission is to build the largest network of practicing musicians.

"Honestly, we initially started with a couple of friends who we knew would really like a better way to practice and play music," Sandler says. "Now it's become Chromatik. Putting sheet music on an iPad isn't terribly interesting to me. It's a means to power performance. But the collaborative piece is the most interesting part."
