Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf has been arrested at his home over claims he committed treason while in office.
He was detained overnight after an Islamabad High Court judge rejected his bail in a case involving his decision to fire senior judges while in power.
Mr Musharraf, who ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, had earlier left the court for his farmhouse on the outskirts of Islamabad with bodyguards.
Local TV footage showed the 69-year-old being taken back to the court flanked by police officers.
Lawyers had been due to appeal the arrest order, which threatens to overshadow historic polls in the country.
The former leader has promised to "save" the country and contest the May 11 vote after returning from four years of self-imposed exile.
However, he was banned from standing in the vote earlier this week and the latest developments look set to end his chances of a political comeback.
Mr Musharraf, who is also accused of conspiracy to murder opposition leader Benazir Bhutto in 2007, had repeatedly been granted bail since his homecoming less than a month ago.
Various legal cases against Mr Musharraf have been pending for several years but the proceedings have gathered pace since his return to Pakistan.
Mr Musharraf had obtained pre-arrest bail before he returned to the country, meaning he could not be arrested when he landed. But the court on Friday refused to extend that bail and ordered his arrest.
At his farmhouse, police guarded the main gate of the property and blocked off access to Mr Musharraf's street.
Dozens of supporters gathered nearby to denounce the arrest order, shouting "this is injustice", and "long live Musharraf" as senior members of his political party held talks inside.
A spokesman for Mr Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League said the arrest order was the "wrong decision".
He said: "We are looking into it. Our legal team will meet and see if an appeal should be filed in the Supreme Court against the judgement."
