-GRAND RAPIDS ?Jahaan Brown is the second East Grand Rapids athlete who has verbally committed to Ferris State University this fall, but the senior standout will be headed to Big Rapids with different goals in mind.
Brown, who also is enjoying a fast start to the basketball season, said he will play football for the Bulldogs on scholarship. Meanwhile, EGR senior Marcus Hall announced in November that he will be playing basketball at Ferris.
Brown, who earned Division 3-4 All-State special mention recognition at running back this year, rushed for 1,648 yards and 15 touchdowns on 228 carries for the Pioneers. His plan is to continue his career at running back and study physical therapy at Ferris.
?I always liked the physical part of football more, and I love running the football,? said Brown when it came time to pick one sport over the other. ?It really was never a question for me. In basketball, one player can dominate a game. But in football, every player has to do his part or the team will break down. That?s why football has always been my favorite.?
Ferris first-year coach Tony Annese recently completed his first season of guiding the Bulldogs, who finished the year 7-4 overall, including 6-4 in the conference. EGR coach Peter Stuursma said he expects Brown to be a great fit at Ferris.
"Jahaan Brown will be a great addition to the Ferris State University football program,? Stuursma said.??He is a tremendous football player with a great work ethic, and he understands the game.?He is a running back that gets better with each carry.?
?I know that?Tony Annese and his staff will take good care of him as I believe they are building something special in Big Rapids."
Brown said he was quickly impressed with Annese and his staff.?
?The thing that attracted me the most is the coaching staff,? Brown said. ?It seemed like that really wanted me. I have a lot of friends who are going there, the facilities are nice and it seems like a great fit for me.?
EGR?s basketball team is off to a 1-1 start and will play Grand Rapids Union tonight. Hall and Brown are averaging 24.5 and 16.5 points, respectively.
