Rhoda Hunter, tribal council secretary of the Tule River Indian Reservation, walks into Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church for Mass, Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012. The church bell, its tower being renovated, has tolled throughout the day on Sunday to honor those killed in what many believe is the worst mass murder in tribal history. Hector Celaya, 31, is a suspect in shootings in which three people died and four others, including two young girls, were wounded Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, on the reservation in the Sierra foothills of California's Central Valley. Since 1933 the church bell has slowly tolled to alert tribal members when someone dies. "That's our way of notifying our people that someone has passed away," Hunter said. (AP Photo/Tracie Cone)

(AP) ? Authorities say the gunman who killed four family members on a rural Indian reservation in California had reported thefts to police and was once accused of driving under the influence with his children in the car.

Tule River reservation Police Chief Mike Blain said Monday the DWI claim against 31-year-old Hector Celaya was part of a child custody dispute and was determined to be without merit. He did not elaborate on the theft claims.

Blain said police and the community will have to go back to determine if they missed any red flags before Celaya shot and killed his mother, two uncles and a daughter on the reservation on Saturday night. Two of his other children were wounded.

Celaya later died in a shootout with deputies.
