Twin bombings kill 13, wound more in south India

HYDERABAD, India (AP) ? A pair of bombs exploded in a crowded shopping area in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, killing at least 13 people and wounding scores of others in the worst bombing in the country in more than a year.

The blasts occurred about two minutes apart at around 7 p.m. Thursday outside a movie theater and a bus station, police said. Storefronts were shattered, motorcycles were covered in debris, and food and plates from a roadside restaurant were scattered on the ground near a tangle of dead bodies. Passersby rushed the wounded out of the area.

"This is a dastardly attack, the guilty will not go unpunished," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said. He appealed to the public to remain calm.

The bombs were attached to two bicycles about 150 meters (500 feet) apart in Dilsukh Nagar district, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters in New Delhi. The district is a usually crowded shopping area near a residential neighborhood.

When asked if the government had any suspects, Shinde responded: "We have to investigate."

India has been in a state of alert since Mohammed Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri, was hanged in a New Delhi jail nearly two weeks ago. Guru had been convicted of involvement in a 2001 attack on India's Parliament that killed 14 people, including five gunmen.

Many in Indian-ruled Kashmir believe Guru did not receive a fair trial, and the secrecy with which the execution was carried out fueled anger in a region where anti-India sentiment runs deep.

Andhra Pradesh state Home Minister P. Sabita Reddy said 11 people died on the spot in the two blasts and another two succumbed to their injuries in hospital on Thursday night.

She said another 78 people were injured and hospitalized in the city.

Top state police officer V. Dinesh Reddy said improvised explosive devices with nitrogen compound were used in the blasts.

Mahesh Kumar, a 21-year-old student, was heading home from a tutoring class when a bomb went off.

"I heard a huge sound and something hit me, I fell down, and somebody brought me to the hospital," said Kumar, who suffered shrapnel wounds.

Hyderabad, a city of 10 million in the state of Andhra Pradesh, is a hub of India's information technology industry and has a mixed population of Muslims and Hindus.

"This (attack) is to disturb the peaceful living of all communities in Andhra Pradesh," said Kiran Kumar Reddy, the state's chief minister.

The explosions were the first major bomb attack to hit India since a September 2011 blast outside the High Court in New Delhi killed 13 people. The government has been heavily criticized for its failure to arrest the masterminds behind previous bombings.

Officials from the National Investigation Agency and commandos of the National Security Guards arrived from New Delhi to help with the investigation in Hyderabad.

The United States, whose Secretary of State John Kerry was meeting Thursday in Washington with Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, condemned the attack.

"The United States stands with India in combating the scourge of terrorism and we also prepared to offer any and all assistance Indian authorities may need," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news briefing.

Rana Banerji, a former security official, said India remains vulnerable to such attacks because there is poor coordination between the national government and the states. Police reforms are also moving very slowly and the quality of intelligence gathering is poor, he said.

"The concept of homeland security should be made effective, on a war footing," he said.

Rajnath Singh, the president of main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, demanded a thorough probe into the blasts. His party called for a general strike in the state on Friday.

Parents talking about their own drug use to children could be detrimental

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Parents know that one day they will have to talk to their children about drug use. The hardest part is to decide whether or not talking about ones own drug use will be useful in communicating an antidrug message. Recent research, published in the journal Human Communication Research, found that children whose parents did not disclose drug use, but delivered a strong antidrug message, were more likely to exhibit antidrug attitudes.

Jennifer A. Kam, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Ashley V. Middleton, MSO Health Information Management, published in Human Communication Research their findings from surveys of 253 Latino and 308 European American students from the sixth through eighth grades. The students reported on the conversations that they have had with their parents about alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. Kam and Middleton were interested in determining how certain types of messages were related to the students' substance-use perceptions, and in turn, behaviors.

Past research found that teens reported that they would be less likely to use drugs if their parents told them about their own past drug use. In Kam and Middleton's study, however, Latino and European American children who reported that their parents talked about the negative consequences, or regret, over their own past substance use were actually less likely to report anti-substance-use perceptions. This finding means that when parents share their past stories of substance use, even when there is a learning lesson, such messages may have unintended consequences for early adolescent children.

Kam and Middleton's study identifies specific messages that parents can relay to their children about alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana that may encourage anti-substance-use perceptions, and in turn, discourage actual substance use. For example, parents may talk to their kids about the negative consequences of using substances, how to avoid substances, that they disapprove of substance use, the family rules against substance use, and stories about others who have gotten in trouble from using substances.

"Parents may want to reconsider whether they should talk to their kids about times when they used substances in the past and not volunteer such information, Kam said. "Of course, it is important to remember this study is one of the first to examine the associations between parents' references to their own past substance use and their adolescent children's subsequent perceptions and behaviors."

Leanda Cave diagnosed with skin cancer - Beyond Going Long

February 21, 2013 ? norsemen ? Leanda Cave wins Ironman Hawaii

Reigning Ironman World Champion, Leanda Cave has been reportedly diagnosed with skin cancer. Thankfully, she has recently updated us with the news that she has Basel Cell Carcinoma, which is a very treatable form of the condition and not considered immediately life-threatening.

Cave posted on her Facebook page:

I was just diagnosed with a skin cancer this morning. Make sure you use sun screen and wear a hat people. Take sun protection seriously.

The news comes following Cave?s finest year in the sport to-date, where she came away with wins at the Ironman World Championships and Ironman 70.3 World Championships to become the first ever female double champion.

Leanda has since updated us with the thankful news that:

The skin cancer I have is not serious or life threatening at all. It?s called a Basel Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and is 100% curable. It is a direct result of too much sun exposure.

I just want to make people aware of the damage the sun can do. I would love to see all kids wearing hats and sun screen.?It result of too much sun exposure. I just want to make people aware of the damage the sun can do. I would love to see all kids wearing hats and sun screen.

Athletes such as iron-distance triathletes can have a higher risk factor concerning skin disorders and cancers due to the increased amount of time spent in the sun, and as such extra precautions need to be taken like applying strong sunscreen and wearing protective clothing like hats, sunglasses and UV protective shirts.

Treatment for the disease can vary depending on what stage the condition is in, but doctors may recommend surgery, radiotherapy, topical chemotherapy or a combination or none of these. Careful monitoring forms a large part of any future care to prevent?re-occurrence.

Prognosis for those affected by skin cancer is often excellent, especially when diagnosed early and we wish Leanda our love and support following the news this morning.

AIG is the new Apple of hedge fund managers' eyes: report

NEW YORK (Reuters) - American International Group has replaced Apple Inc as the hedge fund industry's favorite stock, according to a Goldman Sachs Group analysis of fourth-quarter regulatory filings.

The American insurer, bailed out by the U.S. government during the financial crisis, knocked Apple out of the top spot in a list of stocks deemed most important to hedge funds, according to a Goldman report released late Wednesday.

The fact that Apple has lost favor with many hedge fund managers is not too surprising, given the 20 percent slide in the stock in the fourth quarter. Still, Apple's fall from grace follows a long run as No. 1.

"For the first time in three years was not the top stock in our VIP list, instead ranking as the third most frequent top-10 holding," the report said, adding that funds reduced their Apple positions "by over 30 percent."

AIG was held by a number of well known hedge fund managers at the end of 2012, including Daniel Loeb's Third Point, David Tepper's Appaloosa Management and George Soros's personal money management firm, according to quarterly 13-F regulatory filings that became public last week.

Bruce Berkowitz's Fairholme Capital Management also owns a major stake in AIG. Activist hedge fund Jana Partners added to its AIG holdings in the fourth quarter.

Loeb began scooping up AIG shares in the second and third quarters of 2012, arguing it is a "cheap restructured equity" that has "significant upside," according to a recent Third Point investor letter reviewed by Reuters.

AIG was one of the hedge fund's biggest winners in the fourth quarter, the letter said. Shares of AIG rose 7.65 percent in the quarter.

Loeb and several other notable hedge fund managers, including Omega Advisors' Leon Cooperman and Eton Park's Eric Mindich, dumped their Apple stakes in the fourth quarter, according to regulatory disclosures filed in February.

Apple shares have tumbled in price since hitting an all-time high of $705.07 on September 21. They had fallen 24 percent by the end of 2012.

The stock has continued to languish this year and was one of the worst performers in the S&P 500 stock index in January, dropping 17 percent as investors continued to worry about increasing competition and declining profit margins.

The company is also now embroiled in a legal battle with hedge fund veteran David Einhorn, who has been a proponent of the technology giant for many years at his hedge fund Greenlight Capital, even dispensing Ipod Nanos to investors as a gift in 2011.

Einhorn, who added to his hedge fund's Apple holdings in the fourth quarter, has filed a lawsuit to block changes in Apple's policy for issuing preferred stock. He is advocating that the company issue a new class of preferred stock to share more of its $137 billion cash pile with shareholders.
