Reigning Ironman World Champion, Leanda Cave has been reportedly diagnosed with skin cancer. Thankfully, she has recently updated us with the news that she has Basel Cell Carcinoma, which is a very treatable form of the condition and not considered immediately life-threatening.
Cave posted on her Facebook page:
I was just diagnosed with a skin cancer this morning. Make sure you use sun screen and wear a hat people. Take sun protection seriously.
The news comes following Cave?s finest year in the sport to-date, where she came away with wins at the Ironman World Championships and Ironman 70.3 World Championships to become the first ever female double champion.
Leanda has since updated us with the thankful news that:
The skin cancer I have is not serious or life threatening at all. It?s called a Basel Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and is 100% curable. It is a direct result of too much sun exposure.
I just want to make people aware of the damage the sun can do. I would love to see all kids wearing hats and sun screen.?It result of too much sun exposure. I just want to make people aware of the damage the sun can do. I would love to see all kids wearing hats and sun screen.
Athletes such as iron-distance triathletes can have a higher risk factor concerning skin disorders and cancers due to the increased amount of time spent in the sun, and as such extra precautions need to be taken like applying strong sunscreen and wearing protective clothing like hats, sunglasses and UV protective shirts.
Treatment for the disease can vary depending on what stage the condition is in, but doctors may recommend surgery, radiotherapy, topical chemotherapy or a combination or none of these. Careful monitoring forms a large part of any future care to prevent?re-occurrence.
Prognosis for those affected by skin cancer is often excellent, especially when diagnosed early and we wish Leanda our love and support following the news this morning.
