This Week: ?The two games facing the Heat have been circled on the calendar since the beginning of the season, this is one tough trip for a University basketball team to make and due to a quirk of schedule this is the second year in a row UBC Okanagan has been scheduled to travel to the two Prairie schools. Friday night the Heat will play in Saskatoon versus the Huskies and then just 25 hours later in Edmonton, the Heat will battle the No.5 Alberta Golden Bears.

Friday the Heat are in Saskatoon with a scheduled tipoff at 6 p.m. PST at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon, SK.

Last week:?The UBC Okanagan men?s basketball team suffered two losses this past weekend on their home court. In a defensive struggle both the Calgary Dinos and the Heat struggled to score for most of the 40 minutes, but in the end Calgary?s Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson was able to carry the Dinos to a59-56?victory. Saturday the Pronghorns didn?t worry about struggling to score versus the Heat because Logan Reiter could not miss, scoring 29 points on 7-8 shooting from the three point line to deny the Heat their third victory of the season, and the Heat fell?81-74?to the visitors. The two losses sink UBC Okanagan?s record down to 2-11.

Looking ahead: Another tough weekend looms for the UBC Okanagan basketball team after their Prairie swing trip. The Heat will host a pair of games against the No. 2 ranked team in the country and their sister school, the UBC Thunderbirds. Look for the action on UBC?s Okanagan campus with tipoff on Friday night at 8 p.m. and on Saturday at 7 p.m.

This weekend?s foe (Huskies): Friday?s matchup for the Heat will be the always tough Saskatchewan Huskies; Saskatchewan is third in their division with an 8-4 record in conference play and come off two hard fought wins in the Fraser Valley over Trinity and the then No. 4 Fraser Valley Cascades. A three point loss to UBC back in November is the only loss for Saskatchewan on their home court this season.? The team?s three road losses were to UNBC, Lethbridge and Regina.

Head-to-head (Huskies + Heat): ??The only times these two teams have matched is in the Heat?s first CIS league last January in Saskatoon. The Huskies washed over UBC Okanagan that day 96-67.

Huskies to watch: The Huskies have been led on offence by Canada West scoring leader Stephon Lamar's 25.5 points per game and sophomore Matthew Forbes averaging 16.3 points per game. On defence, fifth-year forward Patrick Burns is holding down the back line, averaging 9.5 rebounds and 20 steals on the season.

This weekend?s foe (Bears): Alberta lost in the national championship game last March to Carleton and the No. 5 Golden Bears once again look like a team that could be in that game this season. The Edmonton juggernaut is 10-2 in conference play having only dropped road games to Trinity last Friday and to Calgary at the beginning of November. Their perfect home record is highlighted with a sweep of the top two Pacific team?s the T?Birds and the Vikes in the first semester.

Head-to-head (Bears + Heat): Last year in January during conference play in Edmonton the Heat fell to the eventual national runner-up Alberta team 87-54. In 2010-11 the two teams played an exhibiton game with UBC Okanagan once again falling to Alberta in Edmonton 81-69.

Bears to look out for: The Bears are led once again by fourth-year guard Jordan Baker, who spent last weekend passing Nick Maglisceau (1,301 points) for second place in all-time conference scoring for the Bears. Third-year guard Kenneth Otieno, who?s been on fire as of late, averages 20.2 points per game in his last six and netted 52 points last weekend, including 38 in the second halves alone.

Anybody can score for the Heat: UBC Okanagan has spread the ball around to win games this season with four players averaging double digits. Azi Fahandeg-Sadi leads the group with 14.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Mitch Goodwin adds 13.4 ppg and Yassine Ghomari chips in another 11.8 per night but has led the team in scoring two of the three games since returning from an injury in the first league game. Anwar Faza has scored 10.8 a night, Greet Gill 9.0 ppg but leads the team in rebounding hauling in 6.7 a game.

SASKATOON ? After being left on the outside looking in, the Saskatchewan Huskies look to a host of new players to lead them back to the CIS championship.

The Huskies have picked up where they left off a season ago with a 5-1 preseason record. They return no starters, but are still poised to be a top contender in Canada West. Replacing Canada West MVP and First Team All-Canadian Jamelle Barrett and orward Michael Lieffers will be challenging.

Matt Forbes, who saw valuable minutes last season as a freshman, will replace the Canada West Defensive Player of the Year from a season ago in the Huskies frontcourt. Forbes will play a bigger role on the team this year after averaging a respectable 7.5 points and 4 rebounds per game as a freshman.

Saskatchewan will look to last season?s role players to make major contributions this year. Patrick Burns, the only fifth year player on the roster, will be looked to for leadership by a relatively young squad. Burns? Canada West and CIS Championship experience will be relied on for the Huskies to make another deep run in the playoffs. Third year guard Ben Baker who averaged 22.2 minutes per game last season, will be stepping into a bigger role this season in running the Huskies back court.

The Huskies will look to replace lost offence with Stephon Lamar, a San Diego City College transfer. Saskatchewan also added Pitt Meadows, B.C. standout Trevor Severinski. The Huskies continued to add local talent to their roster this off-season, signing Daniel Ostertag, Graham Black, and Matt Harbidge.

EDMONTON ? Despite a new coach, and some new additions to the roster, the Alberta Golden Bears should be in contention to defend their Canada West title.

Last year the Golden Bears finished with a 14-6 record, including 10-0 at home, but caught fire in the playoffs to win the Canada West title and a silver medal at the CIS championship. This year, with a brand new coach in Barnaby Craddock, as well as a solid nucleus of returning players Alberta looks to be a contender once again.

Craddock, 2006 CIS Coach of the Year, joined the Golden Bears in the off-season, along with Montreal-born guard Youssef Ouhrig. The 6-0 point guard led the CEGEP league in assists last season, was second in steals and 10th in scoring. In his three years with Champlain College in Quebec, he averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game.

Returning to program are starters Jordan Baker (G), who attended a national team ID camp this summer, forwards Todd Bergen-Henengouwen and 6-11 Rob Dewar, and guard Sahr Saffa who was named to the CIS Final 8 tournament all-star team last March. Baker, a former Canada West all-star and CIS all-Canadian, is averaging a near double-double every time he steps on the floor in his career, and will lead the team, while Saffa, who was red-hot to close out last year, will be a key offensive force as well. Bergen-Henengouwen and Baker will control the game inside the paint, giving the Golden Bears great options for scoring all over the floor.

Rejoining the team this year is sophomore guard Kenny Otieno. The Lethbridge-born 6-2 guard averaged 6.0 points per game in his rookie season, as well as three rebounds per contest.
