Does green tea help weight loss?

When I was asked to write about this topic I hesitated, because I do not have first-hand weight loss experience. I have always kept a stable and healthy body weight even after gave birth to my son. When being asked about the ?secret? of weight control, my answer used to be ?Hmm?well, I am Asian.? But I cannot ignore the fact that with the spreading of fast food into Asian countries, overweight and obesity have rapidly increased in Asian population. Having a good gene helps, but it does not mean you are automatically exempted from overweight, obesity, and other related problems.

When I was a child, I had a very weak and sensitive digesting system. I remember my mother always gave me a cup of hot green tea to calm down my upset stomach. Because of my weak stomach, I learned to be careful about what to put into my mouth, not overeating, and listen to my body. Eventually I grew out of the problem. To me, besides all other benefits, one of the most important and practical function of tea is cleansing. If I have something greasy and heavy I will have a cup of hot green tea to wash it down. Whatever is not good or too much for my body, I want it out of my system fast. Drink water can also do that but green tea has something extra, that is the power of breakdown grease. My grandma used to collect tea leaves after infusion and used them for kitchen ware cleaning.

I believe human body has a superb self-regulation mechanism. It does not take in everything we eat but keeps a balance between intake and output. Our body regularly expels and burns those extra food. However, the balance point can be shifted if you keep pushing it. After all you are the master of your body. Bad diet and lack of exercise will cause fat deposition, waste accumulation and solidifying in our colon system, and thus breakdown the self-regulation function of our body. Cleansing is important for our body to function normally. Green tea and high fiber diet are good for that.

From weight loss point of view, it is a simple math, ether to reduce calorie intake or increase energy consumption. Anyone who reads the food labels and goes to gym knows that it is easy to have extra calorie intake and very hard to burn it off. Tea has zero calorie without milk and sugar. Simply switching from Soda to tea can significantly reduce daily calorie intake and lead to weight loss. It has also been reported that green tea contains catechin polyphenols, which can raise metabolic rate and burn extra calories.

Tea is not a quick treatment for overweight. It is a component of a healthy lifestyle. I drink tea for the appreciation of its aroma and taste; I drink tea to enjoy a calm and peaceful moment; and I drink tea for comfort when my body gets upset. Does tea drinking has something to do with my stable and healthy body weight? I am sure it does but it cannot do it alone. I always have a balanced diet with a lot of vegetables and exercise regularly.
