Fat is a beautiful organ

It's time to stop demonising fat ? what matters is where it's hiding, says body MRI expert

You say it's only in recent decades that fat has been demonised. What do you mean?
For thousands of years, people who would now be considered overweight were admired. To be large was a sign of prosperity, and was associated with fertility. If you look at paintings and drawings over thousands of years, you are always going to see women with a body mass index above 25, and up to 30, who are considered beautiful. It is only in the last 30 years that we have seen a drop in BMI in such portrayals and the concept of health related to lower and lower BMIs.

Have we really got our ideas about fat so wrong?
If you stop people in the street and ask them if they are happy with their amount of fat, they will say no. If you then ask if they want to reduce it, they say yes. Ask by how much and they will say they want to reduce it completely. Getting rid of fat should not be the aim. The aim should be to have a healthy amount, but nobody thinks in those terms. We have demonised it.

Who is to blame for fat's bad press?
There is not a day that goes by without an article in a newspaper or magazine telling you how to reduce fat. Not a single article will say, look, not only is a certain amount of fat good, but it is essential for your well-being.

How should we regard our body fat then?
Not just as a dumping ground for excess energy, which is the way most people see it, but as a beautiful organ that interacts with your environment and helps maintain homeostasis within your body. Fat controls and modulates your fertility, your appetite and your mood. Your immune response will not work properly if you don't have the right amount of fat.

Is this demonising of fat harmful?
We have shown that people who diet strictly can have problems. Supermodels tend to have a lot of liver fat, which is unhealthy, although their BMI can be as low as 15 to 16. The separation between beauty and health has created its own problems. We now consider people to be beautiful if they have a very low BMI but it would be healthier to have a BMI of 24, with the right distribution of fat.

Is all fat good for you?
There is a reason why body fat is there and it is a reflection of your lifestyle. Too much fat, where it is and in what form might be bad. Excess fat in the liver is bad. Subcutaneous fat, particularly around your gluteal area, is protective.

So where excess fat ends up is important?
Absolutely. With new imaging techniques, we have discovered people with "sub-phenotypes" of fat distribution. They have normal levels of fat but with increased risk of certain diseases because of fat deposits in and around internal organs. This is what we call Tofi - thin on the outside, fat inside. This internal fat is believed to be more likely to lead to type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Other people can increase their external fat with very little effect on their internal fat.

Obama, Romney trade accusations of dishonesty

WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) ? President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney have one campaign strategy in common: Each is trying to convince voters that his opponent in the closely contested race for the White House is not trustworthy.

Romney was wrapping up a weekend at his New Hampshire lake house and planned to raise money on Monday with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ? one possible candidate for his running mate.

Obama was scheduled to campaign in Cincinnati two days before Romney makes his own visit to must-win Ohio.

The two men were set to continue a bitter debate over who is more trustworthy and use Romney's time leading a private equity firm as a starting point.

Romney's campaign said Sunday that Obama is willing to say anything to win a second term and should say he's sorry for attacking the Republican's successful career at Bain Capital.

"No, we will not apologize," the president responded, adding that if Romney wants credit for his business leadership, he also needs to take responsibility. The Obama campaign says that with Romney at the helm, Bain Capital sent thousands of well-paying American jobs to China.

Questions about Romney's tenure at Bain Capital, the fortune he earned there, foreign bank accounts and his refusal to release more of his tax returns have dogged the former Massachusetts governor. Romney insists he left the firm in February 1999 to take over the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, but documents indicate he was still in charge as late as 2001.

Romney's advisers, trying to explain the discrepancies between Romney's account and federal documents, offered fresh explanations to shift the campaign back to more comfortable ground.

"He actually retired retroactively at that point," Romney adviser Ed Gillespie said Sunday. "He ended up not going back to the firm after his time in Salt Lake City. So he was actually retired from Bain."

A second adviser, Kevin Madden, said Romney had no choice but to have his name listed on Security and Exchange Commission documents as he sought to transfer the company's leadership to partners.

"The reason that there is a document that had ... his signature is because, during that transition from 1999 to 2002 ... there was a duty to sign those documents," Madden said.

The exact role Romney played at the firm between 1999 and 2001 is important not only because critics have raised questions about his truthfulness, but also because Bain was sending U.S. jobs overseas during the period.

Documents on file with the SEC place Romney in charge of Bain from 1999 to 2001, a period in which the company outsourced jobs and ran companies that fell into bankruptcy. Romney has tried to distance himself from this period in Bain's history, saying on financial disclosure forms he had no active role in the company as of February 1999.

But at least three times since then, Bain listed Romney as the company's "controlling person," as well as its "sole shareholder, sole director, chief executive officer and president." One of those documents ? as late as February 2001 ? lists Romney's "principal occupation" as Bain's managing director.

Romney launched a rare, five-network interview blitz on Friday and insisted he was not involved with Bain during the time it sent jobs overseas and had no day-to-day responsibility for the firm.

"I had no role whatsoever in the management of Bain Capital after February of 1999," he said. "I was an owner, and being a shareholder doesn't mean you're running the business."

That wasn't enough for Obama.

"Mr. Romney claims he's Mr. Fix-It for the economy because of his business experience, so I think voters entirely legitimately want to know what is exactly his business experience," Obama told WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Va., in an interview taped Saturday and posted on the station's website Sunday

"Mr. Romney is now claiming he wasn't there at the time except his filings with the SEC listing says he was the CEO, chairman and president of the company."

Gillespie appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" and CNN's "State of the Union. Madden spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Committee to grill regulator, Barclays executive

LONDON (Reuters) - The top national bank regulator and a former executive in the middle of an interest rate scandal at Barclays face a grilling by British MPs on Monday over what they knew about an affair that has drawn in banks, regulators and politicians on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Commons Treasury Select Committee will question Jerry del Missier two weeks after he quit as chief operating officer of Barclays, the British bank hit by an interest rate manipulation scandal that has blown up into a political storm. He was the trusted investment banking lieutenant of Bob Diamond, the Barclays chief executive who quit the same day.

Del Missier is said by Barclays to have misinterpreted a message from Diamond and told the bank's staff that the Bank of England had sanctioned them submitting lower rates to massage down the London Interbank Offered Rate, or Libor, the rate that underpins global transaction worth trillions of dollars.

Del Missier has yet to comment publicly on the matter and his evidence could shine a light on who knew what at Barclays after testimony from Diamond which some committee members have characterised as misleading, a charge Diamond has rejected.

Adair Turner, chairman of the Financial Services Authority (FSA), will follow del Missier before the committee. He will face questions on the regulator's involvement and whether it was tough enough when rate rigging occurred between 2005 and 2009.

Barclays was fined a record $450 million last month by U.S. and British authorities for manipulating the Libor interest rate. Barclays will pull out of the rate-setting panel for interbank lending in the United Arab Emirates because of its involvement in the Libor scandal in the country, industry sources told Reuters on Sunday.

Libor is compiled from estimates by big banks of how much they believe they have to pay to borrow from each other. It is used for $550 trillion of interest rate derivatives contracts and influences rates on mortgages, student loans and credit cards. An understated estimate could allow a bank to present a better picture of its financial health.

Questions have arisen over whether supervision of the benchmark rate was too lax. The Bank confirmed on Friday it had received U.S. recommendations to overhaul Libor, and had passed them on to the banking trade group responsible for the rate.

It also emerged that Barclays alerted U.S. regulators as far back as 2007 to concerns that banks were rigging benchmark interest rates, and policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic did not appear to take decisive action.

The British parliamentary committee has questioned Diamond, Barclays' Chairman Marcus Agius and Paul Tucker, deputy governor of the Bank , in its efforts to uncover what happened at Barclays.

Diamond and del Missier quit on July 3 and Agius said, during testimony to the committee last Tuesday, that the Bank Governor Mervyn King effectively forced Diamond to go because he had lost the confidence of regulators.

Turner, one of the favourites to take over from King as the Bank governor next year, is likely to be asked how involved he was in forcing Diamond out.

He could also be challenged on why the FSA didn't react more to warnings about Libor, and what was clearly a strained relationship with Barclays.

The FSA chief sent a scathing letter to Barclays in April telling the bank that its "aggressive" culture needed to improve.

MISUNDERSTANDING

Barclays is the only bank so far to giving false information as part of the process of setting Libor.

A conversation in October 2008 between Diamond and Tucker is at the centre of confusion about whether Barclays was told by the central bank it could submit lower Libor rates.

In an internal memo written after that conversation, Diamond said Tucker told him "it did not always need to be the case that we appeared as high as we have recently".

Diamond has since said he did not take that as an instruction to submit lower rates, but said del Missier mistakenly understood the memo as a green light to do so. Del Missier declined to comment, a spokesman for Barclays said.

When Tucker appeared before the committee he said the memo misrepresented the conversation. The purpose of the call was to share his concerns about Barclays' funding costs rather than discuss interest rates, Tucker said.

Turner, 56, has been head of the FSA since 2008, when he warned of a more intrusive and direct style of supervision after the painful lessons from the financial crisis.

He will be joined in front of MPs by Andrew Bailey, the FSA's head of banking supervision, and Tracey McDermott, the FSA's acting director of enforcement. They are due to appear at 3.45 p.m., after del Missier at 3 p.m .

More than a dozen banks are expected to be drawn into the Libor scandal, which is being probed by authorities in North America, Europe and Japan.

Agius and senior Barclays executives told staff the bank's problems would be "put in perspective" by fines imposed on rivals, according to a memo sent out on Friday.

Libor rates submitted by banks are compiled by Thomson Reuters, parent company of Reuters, on behalf of the British Bankers' Association.
